This SNL Star Wars Toy Commercial Brings the Nostalgia

On last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live, one of the bits that aired was a Star Wars toy commercial parody–no doubt inspired by the fact that we’re getting inundated with merch these days (thanks Disney!). And it started off familiar, with an excited voiceover talking about all the new action figures and play sets for ages 6 and up!

And then the older generation of fans (played by SNL cast members Kyle Mooney, Bobby Moynihan and Taran Killam) stepped into frame, serving to remind us that while there are kids who are genuinely excited to get to play with Star Wars action figures, there are also just as many adults who are eager to add these new toys to their growing collections.

Of course this is SNL, so they have to take things to the extreme in terms of presenting these adult fans as obsessive about keeping their toys in the packaging, or overly attentive to detail and accuracy–and there’s the somewhat tired joke about how none of them must be in romantic relationships due to their extreme Star Wars collecting. Sigh.

But aside from those less-than-great parts, this sketch really did have me going back to the nostalgia of what it was like to get toys and action figures for Christmas for the sole purpose of playing and having fun. There’s nothing wrong with being a collector, but there’s nothing wrong with taking your toys out of the box either.
