‘Sinners’ Win At the Actors Awards Gives Us Hope for Oscars Sunday

The Actor Awards was nothing short of phenomenal for Sinners. Ryan Coogler and that cast’s massive triumph has us feeling hopeful about the upcoming Oscars.
Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, and everyone else who worked on that movie have to be feeling good. They cleaned up at The Actors Awards. Social media was aflutter with multiple reactions to the good vibes just emanating from the entire Sinners contingent present at that award show. It’s not an understatement to say that the entire event felt more like a coronation than anything else.
Viola Davis might have been speaking for all of us when she shouted with joy when Michael B Jordan claimed the award for Best Actor. It’s still going to be tight, as Timothée Chalamet really came on strong with Marty Supreme late last year. But, you have to feel a little bit better about Jordan’s chances after seeing the outpouring of support from that room as a collective. Nothing is for certain, but good vibes are usually welcome.
It’s been well documented at this point, but the Sinners cast has been through a lot of shenanigans during this award season. From the debacle at the BAFTA’s days ago, to the entertainment press being a little bit wary of accepting Coogler’s latest creation. It’s been a series of hurdles for Sinners, from the moment it was released until right now. The movie’s vocal fanbase online has made it their mission to assert that this film deserves the top spot at the Oscars. Getting there is another thing entirely though.
Sinners’ legitimacy does not hinge on an Oscars triumph though

This year’s Oscars promises to be a strange one, even by post 2020 standards. Things have really shifted in the theatrical model, and the voters are more unpredictable than they’ve ever been. Last year’s show was a really good time. But, for a lot of people watching at home, It will be hard, if not impossible to shake the feeling that Sinners has a lot to battle against. (And we promise we didn’t do that just to get a PTA reference in there.
One thing is for certain, for titles that manage to cross over and find an audience, the rewards are palpable. Yes there have been fan communities that have lobbied for their favorite films to take home all those gold trophies in recent years. But, the Sinners love is the first one that feels like a fandom at its core. It also helps when the movie getting this kind of push actually has a chance to claim a trophy. The award shows are unfair after all, everybody has a “snubs” column primed up and ready to go the second the show wraps.
With all that said, it’s hard not to look at the genuine phenomenon of this movie that Ryan Coogler and everybody associated helped bring the film to fruition and feel nothing at all. As social media would be quick to remind everybody, “there’s a lack of feeling among general movie releases recently.” Is that really true? I don’t believe so. But, something the sauce with Sinners has made people feel something. Will that lead to an Oscar? It’s too early to tell. However, it feels pretty good right about now.
