Samantha Bee Breaks Down the Voter “Integrity” (Read: Suppression) Commission

Recommended Videos

On the latest episode of Full Frontal, Samantha Bee introduces us to the crackerjack cast of racists in Trump’s “Voter Integrity” Commission. From Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach – “He doesn’t just talk the voter suppression talk; he walks the voter suppression walk” – to Hans von Spakovsky – “the point person for undermining voting rights during the Bush administration” – to Christian Adams – who “spent the last five years filing lawsuits to make counties purge their voting rolls,” the members of the Commission are as terrible as you might expect.

Bee also aptly sums up Kris Kobach’s onerous voter information request to the 50 state-level secretaries of state, demanding details like partial Social Security numbers, political affiliations, and criminal records. “Dear Sir or Madam,” she paraphrases the letter. “You suck at your job. Please dox all your voters.”

Bee also discusses how Trump’s team uses the requirement that “states make a reasonable effort to keep their voter rolls up-to-date” as a legal weapon to force voter purges. She jokes that they “clutch [this law] to their snowy bosoms, like a holy relic with the miraculous power to purge voter rolls.”

As is typical with Full Frontal segments, though, the jokes can never come anywhere near as grim-dark as the reality. “Guys like this have been playing the long game,” she explains, “methodically chipping away at the Voting Rights Act…And now, this president has handed them the keys to the candy shop, so they can run in and purge all the chocolates.”
