Ayer admitted that while Harley’s relationships will be front and center in the movie, the film actually focuses on her liberation as a character and finding her independence outside of the Joker’s influence. “That really is a metaphor for everyone’s journey here,” Ayer said.

Harley and Deadshot have a history in the comics (remember that clown car ‘joke?’) but hearing that a love triangle might be a major aspect of Harley’s role only adds to the reservations I have about Suicide Squad already. Here’s hoping that the movie develops Harley’s character outside of her relationships with the men in the movie, and that “her liberation” is more about her than it is about Deadshot or the Joker.
