‘That’s People’: Tourists Wonder What’s Being Made as Smoke Rises from a Building. Then They Discover It’s a Crematorium
Well, that's awkward.
As tourists, you would usually expect to see landmarks or visit popular attractions when traveling. Sometimes, you might even find yourself in an unusual situation, like randomly getting handed pickles while viewing the Statue of Liberty. But for a couple of friends, their drive through a city turned into an “oops” moment when they suddenly realized they were looking at a crematorium.
In a video shared by Top Tier State on TikTok, which has since gained over 2.9 million views, a car can be seen driving through what appeared to be a residential community. The footage also showed giant, thick black smoke coming from a building in the background, which the men assumed was from a fire.
“F****** serious. I bet the whole f****** city knows what that is, and we’re the only f****** tourists that don’t know],” one of the men in the video said. Another was seemingly shocked that there was a fire, with the other agreeing, saying, “It’s a fire, but it’s controlled.”
Tourists left in disbelief at discovery
As the car slowly got closer to the building where the supposed fire was coming from, the men noticed “how bad” the fire looked and wondered what was happening because of the large plume of smoke. “What the hell are they making in there?” one of the men asked when they neared the location and seemingly saw that there wasn’t a burning building.
After a while, the men finally realized what they were looking at. “Oh, bro. Look at what it is. Are you kidding me?” one of them said before telling the others they should “get the hell out of here.” As the car made a U-turn, the man pointed at what appeared to be a signboard. “It’s a cremation society!” the man said. The other men were left in disbelief, saying, “No! That’s people!” referring to their earlier question of what was being made in the building. Others have also been surprised by crematorium-related incidents, like when a woman found someone’s cremation in a box at Aldi.
Viewers were left equally amused by the tourists’ revelation. “It’s a body shop,” one viewer wrote. Others even joined in on the joke, with one saying, “Do they take walk-ins?” Another added, “The neighbors are like ‘oh no worries, that’s just Barbara, may she rest in peace.’”
Big bodies allegedly produce more smoke
Some even provided a possible explanation as to why the smoke was large and dark: “Former Crematory Operator here. So, when cremating large people, it is CRITICAL to cremated them ‘Slow and Low.’ This is because, when fat gets hot it melts. Think Bacon. Now, if they put someone large in there, without dialing back about 300°, the fat melts all at once, and creates a Human Grease Fire. Funeral Homes have burned to the ground because of negligence like this.”
A viewer who claimed to be a firefighter confirmed that large bodies tend to release more smoke, saying, “Crematorium… I’m a firefighter and the local crematorium calls us when they are getting ready to cremate REALLY BIG PEOPLE because they put out much more smoke in the process.” Not long after figuring out what the smoke was from, the tourists immediately drove off, seemingly to a place with fewer crematoriums.
