Robert Downey Jr.’s Only Regret Walking Out of That Avengers Interview Was That He Didn’t Do It Sooner

Avengers star/Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. got a lot of attention for walking out of an interview on the Age of Ultron press tour due to some questions about his past that he didn’t want to get into. When Howard Stern asked him how he felt about it looking back, he said he only wished he’d walked out sooner.

Although, as you can hear for yourself in the Howard Stern Show clip above, Downey had quite a bit to say about British Channel 4’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who was the interviewer he walked out on, after the fact. While Downey’s original walkout was about as polite as something like that can be, he told Stern that Guru-Murthy was a “bottom-feeding muckraker” and said, “What I have to do in the future is I just have to give myself permission to say, ‘That is more than likely a syphilitic parasite, and I need to distance myself from this clown.’ Otherwise, I’m probably going to put hands on somebody, and then there’s a real story.”

In the their interview, Guru-Murthy started asking Downey questions about an old 2008 quote about his political opinions in which he said, “You can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal.” Downey brushed it off with a comment about how opinions change over time, but as Guru-Murthy pressed on with questions about Downey’s history with drugs, he grew visibly upset and wound up leaving the interview early.

You can watch the original interview and judge for yourself, with the exchange that led to Downey walking out beginning at 3:15:
