Rental car company said the damage was already documented. Then they tried to pin it on her: ‘This is a PSA’

They were smart but her sister-in-law is sister

A woman has a public service announcement for anyone who wants to use a car rental company’s services: always play it safe. “This is a PSA for anyone renting a vehicle,” said April Lynn Bencomo in the opening of her TikTok video. She said she visited her sister for her birthday in July with her mother and sister-in-law and rented a car from Enterprise.

She mentioned that when she received the car, she noticed a few scratches and a stain on the seat. Bencome said she notified Enterprise, and they assured her everything was already documented. However, she claimed that two months later they tried to slap an $1,800 bill for the damage, which she hadn’t caused.

During such a tough situation, Bencome said her sister-in-law’s quick thinking saved her. Bencome said her sister-in-law made a video of the car’s defects for documentation, in case anything happened in the future. “So my sister-in-law, thank goodness, she is like, cover your a**. Like, she took this video, and this video saved me from having an 18-dollar bill,” she said.

Bencome explained that when Enterprise accused her, she informed them that she had video evidence proving her innocence, but they continued to insist on their claims. It was only after she provided the video that they stopped their false allegations. “They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, just kidding. We have all this,’” Bencome said, recalling their conversation.

“Enterprise tried the same with us”

Bencome’s story has sparked strong reactions. Her video has over 200 comments, and, interestingly enough, quite a few people in the comments section have had similar experiences with Enterprise.

@Enterprise Do better! I spoke to multiple different staff members about these damages to avoid this and none of them made proper documentation. This makes me wonder how many other people were blamed for damages they did not cause simply because they could not prove that it wasn’t them. To anyone renting a vehicle, documentation is everything! enenterpriseacarrentalsnenterprisecarrentalsy#cya

One person said, “enterprise tried the same with us. disgusting how fast the claim “gets canceled ” when they are made aware you have proof that it was already there prior to taking the car off of the lot.” Another wrote, “enterprise doesnt inspect going out, but super inspect on return. they even charged me for some roof scraches [sic]. i never rent from enterprisd [sic].”

Not everyone’s experience with Enterprise was, however, not bad. One person said, “I always get super nice employees and managers at Enterprise. Luckily nothing bad yet.” Another remarked, “Not all enterprises are like this it’s a select few I went to one in Polk st Dallas Texas they were really nice and thorough long as you come back and car wash the car you have more than a couple weeks your deposit comes right back sorry for your bad experience.”

A few commenters supported Bencome’s advice to document everything when renting a car and recommended additional methods to prevent companies from exploiting customers. One person commented, “Always do it picture of milage too and gas tank cap sometimes they take them open it over there or make them show you how to open it.” Another individual wrote, “ANOTHER PSA: check all the lights and signals before leaving the rental office. One time I discovered that the rental headlights didn’t work as it got dark driving in the middle of the desert.”

While Bencome was fortunate to have video proof of damages, not everyone has such luck and might face expensive charges through no fault of their own.
