RED is based on a three issue comic miniseries written by Warren Ellis, about a retired CIA agent who learns (when a squad of guys show up to kill him) that he is now on the Agency’s hit list.  The movie appears to expand on this idea in some wonderful ways, as naturally happens when you cast Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ernest Borgnine, and Richard Dreyfuss.
