Resident gets revenge on neighbors throwing loud parties at 3 a.m. by blasting ‘Friday’ by Rebecca Black on repeat for two days

That was one weekend filled with "Friday."

A North Carolina resident was fed up with neighbors throwing parties at random hours of the week. Revenge was served by playing Rebecca Black’s Friday through their shared apartment wall for two days straight.

The story surfaced on Reddit’s r/pettyrevenge, where user u/ThisSiteostrash recalled the incident from several years ago in Charlotte. According to the post, the resident had spent weeks complaining to apartment management about parties that sometimes continued into the early hours of weekday mornings. Nothing changed, even after the family recorded the noise.

Rather than file another apparently useless complaint, the resident bought speakers, positioned them against the offending wall, and left a 12-hour music loop playing throughout a weekend trip. The resident said their neighbors stopped throwing loud parties afterward and moved out about a month later. Sometimes, revenge really is best served on repeat.

The neighbors didn’t seem to believe in quiet hours

The resident said their family lived at the apartment complex between mid-2016 and mid-2021, during which frequent management changes coincided with the living conditions going downhill. They were used to hearing occasional music and nighttime noises through the walls, but the new neighbors reportedly treated random weeknights like New Year’s Eve.

Parties sometimes started or continued around 3 a.m. on Mondays, making sleep difficult for anyone sharing a wall. Even confronting the neighbors proved difficult. The building’s layout meant the noise traveled between apartments but couldn’t easily be traced from outside their doors. The resident also claimed police were reluctant to respond to routine noise complaints from neighbors, and would only come if a violent crime was reported.

Charlotte’s noise ordinance sets a nighttime limit of 50 decibels for amplified sound measured inside neighboring apartments. While there’s no evidence the parties exceeded that threshold, it was apparently loud enough to summon the powers of Rebecca Black’s music as a form of retaliation.

‘Friday’ became the neighbors’ weekend soundtrack

After one particularly noisy weekend, the resident decided to return the favor by means of an endless version of Friday while their family was away. The volume was reportedly adjusted so other neighbors wouldn’t hear it. The family then left for an amusement park trip and hotel stay, returning two days later to find the song still playing. The resident initially couldn’t remember whether the chosen track was Friday or Baby Shark, but later updated the post after their wife confirmed it was Rebecca Black’s 2011 viral hit.

Friday racked up more than 167 million YouTube views and over 3 million dislikes in just a few months in 2011, becoming notorious for its simplistic lyrics and heavily criticized production. Audibly, its reputation made it the perfect soundtrack for some very petty revenge.

After fighting noise with noise, the resident finally got some peace and quiet. Their loud former neighbors, though, may have had enough Friday ringing in their ears to last them a few more weekends.
