It is a tough time for the trans community across the world right now and especially in the United Kingdom. Which is why Pedro Pascal taking to the Thunderbolts* London premiere in a “Protect the Dolls” shirt is so important.

Conner Ives created a design that says “Protect the Dolls” and is referencing the affectionate term for trans women used within the LGBTQ+ community. Pascal, whose sister Lux Pascal came out as trans early in 2021, has worn the shirt a lot recently but wearing it at the premiere for the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big move.

Recently, the UK has issued a Supreme Court ruling that strips the rights away from trans women and men and their ability to be protected by discrimination by their genders. The ruling labels sex as biological sex assigned at birth and was celebrated by famous anti-trans people like J.K. Rowling. Pascal joins a beautiful list of Marvel heroes who use their platform to share their support for the trans community.

Tatiana Maslany and Don Cheadle have both used shirts to share their support of the trans community publicly, Brie Larson has pushed back on social media against anti-trans legislation, and Florence Pugh has given her support to the trans community. It is a small gesture but Pascal wearing this shirt at a big Marvel premiere is a necessary step in allyship and the least we all can do.

Ives, who designed the shirt, did an interview with The New York Times and spoke about his inspiration behind it. “In the modern day, what is more ubiquitous than the graphic T-shirt?” Ives went on, saying, “It was very reactive. I knew I wanted to say something, given what we’ve observed in the last few months with the U.S. government and the current political regime.” The proceeds from Ives’ shirts go to Trans Lifeline.

You can purchase the shirt at Ives’ website.
