NYC woman says date kept talking about his ex. Then she somehow turns into their therapist: ‘Cannot become your ex’
She tried to make the situation better for one of them, at least.
Most people hope to find their next great love when going on dates, but what should you do if your date seems fixated on his ex? For some, they become an unpaid couple’s therapist. That was the case for Emily Bonani (@bananabonani), whose first date allegedly ended with her listening to her date’s relationship problems and somehow trying to fix them.
Bonani shared her first date experience using the TikTok-style humor of a hypothetical scenario, which has since gained over two million views on the app. “We’re on a first date. You bring up your ex,” Bonani said in the video. “I let you talk about your ex, and we move forward.”
While it’s not uncommon for someone to mention an ex-partner on a first date, it will probably raise eyebrows when an ex is repeatedly brought into the conversation—which was the case for Bonani. “Five minutes later, you bring up your ex again,” Bonani said, and like the first time, she listened to her date talk about his ex before continuing on with the date.
She helps rekindle her date and his ex’s relationship
Bonani’s date, however, brings up his ex for the third time just five minutes later. At that point, Bonani already knew she wouldn’t be getting a second date. The TikToker added background music to humorously reflect her understanding of the situation, then looked at the camera and said, “At this point, I realize you wish this was a date with your ex.”
Bonani knew she couldn’t simply become his ex, so she said she would become the best next thing at that moment. “Realizing that I cannot become your ex, I have decided that I will now become something much more valuable,” Bonani said. “I become a therapist.”
Seeing that Bonani’s date was seemingly hung up on his ex, Bonani decided to offer him some straightforward advice on how to rekindle their relationship. “We dive in. You tell me what happened. I tell you what actually happened,” Bonani said.
Bonani’s date then pulled out his phone and allegedly told her that his ex didn’t want to be contacted by him. Bonani, using her knowledge as a fellow woman, claimed his ex wanted the opposite: “I tell you she does. She wants to hear from you. She just wants to hear you say something different than what you’ve said.”
Bonani said she and her date attempted to text the ex twice, but received no response. But when they called her, the ex finally answered, and they arranged to meet at the bar where Bonani and her date were. “She says yes cause she’s been waiting for you too,” Bonani said before adding, “You guys are actually in love.”
All they needed was to communicate
When the ex arrived at the bar, Bonani claimed she became the mediator of their relationship and that all they needed was to learn how to express themselves clearly. She summarized the reconciliation: “I then mediate your relationship. Turns out you guys just couldn’t communicate, and now magically you can. Everything’s solved. You get back together.”
Bonani ended the video saying, “And then I f*** the bartender or something. I don’t know.” In a style befitting a rom-com as its side character witnessing the leads’ romance, she added in her caption a different scenario: “Actually you have a friend for me. I meet him at your wedding.”
Viewers were entertained by Bonani’s apparent first-date fail and how she became the couple’s therapist. Viewers poked fun at the TikToker and asked about her services. “Hey are you free this weekend?” one commenter joked. Some believe that the bartender serving them during the date likely “eavesdropped the entire time.” Another chimed in, saying, “I’m bartendering [sic] this weekend. You should have your date here.”
Others praised Bonani for how she handled the turn of events. “You’re so mature on so many levels it’s crazy,” a commenter said. Viewers also felt her experience could be turned into a production, saying, “Make this a movie STAT.” Some, however, thought Bonani should be compensated. “No you charge him $250,” a commenter wrote.
Viewers also added in their own scenarios to how the story should end. One commented, “You also get invited to be the wedding officiant.” While Bonani didn’t come out of the date with a relationship of her own, her experience makes for an interesting story to tell in the future.
