ReedPOP Plans To Make New York Comic Con a 10-Day Affair With “NY Super Week”

"One Week To Rule Them All" Indeed.

At San Diego Comic Con, local business vendors all over the city end up capitalizing on the nerd craze. In New York, though, the farther away you get from the Javits Center, the more confusing your cosplay looks to outsiders. That might change this year with “Super Week,” an event that claims it will “bring the entire universe of popular culture to every corner of all five boroughs.”

This isn’t the first time ReedPOP has attempted to expand their admittedly crowded NYCC events (seriously, just try to make it from one end of Javits to the other without getting your eye poked out by a sonic screwdriver) outward. This weekend they’re also putting on a comics-only convention called “Special Edition NYC,” where some of us will be in attendance at our sister site The Mary Sue’s booth. This, however, is going to be a lot bigger than that. A lot bigger.

A week-long series of events that begins on October 3rd and continues through the 12th, “Super Week” will consist of concerts, comedy shows, eSports competitions, lectures, podcast tapings, and even food tastings all across New York City. NYCC’s press release cites Startalk Live with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Story Collider,  Running Late with Scott Rogowsky, and NPR’s Ask Me Another as examples of just what to expect from the week.

In addition to attending each of these live events, you can also purchase a “Super Week” card, which gets you priority seating at a bunch of events; drink specials at some of our favorite bars like Duke’s, The Way Station, Barcade, and the Bell House; discounts to walking tours like the Shop Gotham; and discounts at Midtown Comics and other participating retailers. I’d get one of those just for the drink specials, man. Have you ever had the Shirley Temple of Doom at the Way Station? It is pure cherry grenadine bliss.

“New York Super Week will follow the spirit of popular events like South by Southwest, but introduce it with a distinct New York sensibility and flair and fully rooted in the world of popular culture,” Global Senior Vice President of ReedPOP Lance Fensterman said. “With New York Comic Con becoming so popular amongst fans, media and sponsors it was natural to broaden the scope of content and tear it out of the Javits Center and into the city at large allowing new fans and more fans to experience a whole week of content leading into the show.”

Expect further details about tickets and other Super Week events to roll out over the course of the summer leading up to New York Comic Con on October 9th. We’re pretty excited, if only because thinking about the Javits gives us very uncomfortable flashbacks sometimes. Let’s all just hang out in Barcade instead with Frogger and Pac-Man instead, okay guys?
