New York City man went to a coffee shop and placed an $18 order. Then the manager confronted him about leaving no tip
They wanted 18% on top of an $18 bill.
Maxwell (@maxwellsvision) was having a good morning in New York City when he decided to stop by a local coffee shop for breakfast. His day was ruined after he was allegedly confronted for not leaving a tip.
“Tipping culture in America gotta be studied. You telling me I gotta tip you for taking my order at a coffee shop?” Maxwell told TikTok. He was craving a bagel, so he went to the undisclosed coffee shop. He was feeling good that day, noting that he even had a pep in his step.
“I’m not really feeling no bagel no more. I’m seeing wraps, I’m seeing bacon, egg, and cheeses, all that stuff,” he said as he went inside the establishment. He told the cashier that he wanted a turkey wrap with additional bacon since he had just finished working out.
“Sweet lady, sweet older lady,” Maxwell described the cashier. She asked if he wanted cheese with his order, and he refused. However, Maxwell asked her to add sriracha inside the wrap.
“We don’t really do that. You can put the hot sauce on yourself, though,” the cashier allegedly told him. Maxwell found it odd, thinking that it would only take her a few seconds to add the sriracha herself, but he didn’t argue. Before finishing his order, the cashier asked Maxwell if he wanted coffee with his order, and he refused, asking if the shop sold energy drinks instead. The cashier pointed to a nearby fridge, and Maxwell added a Celsius energy drink to his order.
Refusing to leave a tip has consequences
Maxwell was getting ready to pay with Apple Pay when the tipping screen appeared. He could choose an 18%, 20%, or 25% tip, but Maxwell decided to skip. “Unless they do something outlandish to me, maybe,” Maxwell explained. He added that if the lady offered to add hot sauce to the wrap, he would have considered tipping her.
“You just took my order. New York is already insane. The total was already $18 for a wrap and a Celsius,” he said. Eventually, Maxwell paid, and he noticed the cashier reading his receipt. He alleged, “She hands me my receipt, her whole attitude changes.” Maxwell alleged her tone shifted, and her facial expression became blank.
“When I walked in, she was the most smiley old lady in the world. So cute, so lovable,” Maxwell said. The cashier told him to sit down and wait for his name to be called out. After five minutes, he was called to claim his turkey wrap at the counter. He thought the older lady was going to hand him the wrap. Instead, he was faced with the manager of the coffee shop, whose position he inferred from her name tag.
Maxwell claimed that as the manager was handing him the wrap, she said, “You couldn’t leave a tip?” At that point, Maxwell felt confused by the manager’s side comment.
“Can you make this make sense before I leave? Tips are earned, not given,” he said. He didn’t see the point in tipping someone who couldn’t even put a condiment in his wrap. The manager allegedly replied, “Well, in this neighborhood, people tip 18% minimum.”
“That’s actually insane, because I’m going to be in this neighborhood for the next year,” Maxwell commented. But not all servers are undeserving of tips. This server from Virginia might need more than an 18% tip after she became an “actress” for her customers’ play.
