Go ahead. Right-click and save this gif of Neil deGrasse Tyson hugging a robot. This humanoid bot named Pepper, designed by French robotics company Aldebaran to aid with elderly care, has emotion recognition and can tell jokes, compliment people’s outfits, and ask them if they’d like a hug. I’m not totally sure how the “emotion recognition” part works, actually, but I can confirm from the video that Pepper is cute as heck; the whole video of his conversation with deGrasse Tyson is gosh darn heartwarming. I want more robot friendship in my life.
