Sorry, Baby is a film directed by, written by, and starring Eva Victor but even though they are very much the central focus of the piece, they couldn’t do it alone. In comes Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges.

Agnes (Victor) is a professor at the college that she went to with her best friend Lydie (Ackie). And now, years later, Lydie is getting ready to have a baby and Agnes has to come to terms with life moving on even if she is still dealing with past traumas. Lydie is there for Agnes and loves her dearly and it is a beautiful relationship to see.

Then, there is Gavin (Hedges). Gavin is a neighbor that Agnes relies on, turns to for comfort, and is a very sweet friends with benefit co-part and to see how both of these characters fit into Agnes’ life is part of what makes Sorry, Baby such a captivating watch. I was lucky enough to speak with Hedges and Ackie about the film and we spoke about being the people there for Agnes when no one else really is.

“When I read the script, in terms of best friends, I instantly was thinking of my best friend I met when I was 11 and growing up as a teenager, she’s the only person that I could talk on the phone with for four hours,” Ackie said. “And we used to just keep talking and that back and forth and no silence, not because it’s uncomfortable, but because we have so much to say to each other. And that felt like the core of this like a Lydie’s presence in Anges’ life is a feedback and they serve that in each other’s lives, is that feedback and that sense of deep comfort.”

Gavin’s relationship is decidedly different because, as Hedges put it, “it’s sort of about having a crush and a crush fulfilled.” You can see our full conversation here:

Sorry, Baby is in theaters now and is Victor’s directorial debut. One that should bring them all the praise and more!
