Family moves into old house. A year later, they realize there’s a hidden room they didn’t know existed—and can’t get into

When you buy an old house with a large property, there is usually a lot of work involved to make it livable and arranged to your liking. Sometimes, that means you may miss entire spaces and only discover them after you’ve already been living there for a while.
That’s what happened to one family. One year after moving into their house, they realized that there was a room they couldn’t access from the inside.
TikTok creator Alisa (@astrogrrl30313) posted a video filming the mysterious room from the outside, sparking massive curiosity with over 9.2 million views.
In the clip, she first films the main house before pointing the camera toward a structure on the side. It looks like an attic with a large window and a pitched roof. In front of it is a storage garage with a cover. There are no stairs, and according to Alisa, there is no way to enter from inside the house.
“We live in our house for a year before we realized there was another bedroom,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. “We can’t access it from inside. Should I climb up there and look inside?”
“Idk how I feel about this,” she wrote in the caption.
Commenters Were Terrified by the Mystery Room
In the comments section, viewers really wanted Alisa to investigate, even though many also thought the setup felt unsettling.
“I’d have to go up there bc I would have convinced myself that someone was living up there without me knowing,” one user wrote.
Several people also referenced a “disappointment room.” This is a term used to describe a hidden room where a person with a mental or physical disability was allegedly locked away and kept out of sight. The idea inspired the 2016 horror movie “The Disappointments Room”.
“Learning what a disappointment room is right before I go to sleep and im going to fall asleep furious,” one commenter wrote.
Others were torn between wanting answers and wanting Alisa to stay far away.
“….. curiosity says yes, horror movie logic says no,” another said.
Then She Went Inside
Eventually, Alisa did make her way inside the space and revealed what she found in a follow-up video.
To get in, she parked near the storage garage roof and stood on top of her car so she could climb up.
When she looked inside, the area appeared to be a rundown wooden attic with slanted support beams.
There was also one extremely strange object inside: a large duck-shaped rocking horse.
“That is not good,” Alisa said while looking at the condition of the attic.
She also went back inside the house and showed the wall that separates her bedroom from the “mystery room.” As she said, the space was inaccessible from there.
“So now I need advice because I feel like that HAS to be cleaned out,” she wrote in the caption. “Still wondering why it was every closed off.”
Is It Common to Find Inaccessible Spaces in Old Houses?
Builders usually don’t intentionally create a secret room, unless specifically asked to do so.
A lot of the time, a room you can’t enter is “a void space.” Sometimes, these happen because of the roofline, stairs, split levels, additions, or unusual framing.
Homeowners online have shared similar experiences. One Reddit user described an inaccessible “no man’s” space above a front door. “[It] is carpeted but not accessible,” they wrote, attaching a photo of the structure.
Another homeowner said they discovered attic or crawlspace areas that were never given proper access. “The contractor who did the rehab before I moved in cut a hole in the ceiling to install insulation, then patched the hole,” they explained.
Commenters under that post said contractors are sometimes forced to do this also because of roof leaks, installation, building permits, and more.
