Mom films her son opening a sealed bag of Wavy Lay’s he got for Halloween. Then he reaches inside and finds exactly 1 chip: ‘Thanks, Lay’s!’

Halloween hauls often include a few snack-size bags of chips tucked among the candy. One mother says her son’s only bag of Wavy Lay’s held a single chip, and she filmed him opening it for TikTok, according to BroBible. As the bag appears sealed in the clip, viewers have turned the moment into a debate about shrinkflation.
The mother who posts on TikTok, filmed the entire process to show just how empty the bag felt. The video shows the boy holding a sealed, snack-sized bag of Wavy Lay’s original that appears completely unopened. Some parents are inspecting Halloween hauls more closely this year, with one mom posting about a lone wrapped gummy bear.
She reportedly points out that the packaging is fully sealed and intact as her son shakes the bag. “My son only got this bag of chips for Halloween. You can see it’s not open at all, anywhere,” the mother said in the video. Some snack buyers have even pulled out kitchen scales to test what a bag promises.
The boy opened the bag and found one chip and not a single crumb
When the boy finally opens the Wavy Lay’s bag, he finds just one perfectly shaped chip. There are no broken pieces or crumbs at the bottom, which makes the whole experience feel like a strange trick rather than a treat. The mother reacts to the discovery by saying, “Thanks, Lay’s.”
This clip quickly gained attention on TikTok as viewers started a heated conversation about the state of snacks. One viewer claimed, “Opened sour patch kids had 2 lol,” while others joked that the boy had technically received a “bag of chip.”
Many people point to shrinkflation as the culprit behind this empty bag. Shrinkflation is a common topic right now as people feel like they are paying more money for less product across the board. However, one chip in a sealed bag of Wavy Lay’s may point to a filling error rather than a quiet cut to the product.
Most of the empty space in a bag of chips is there on purpose
Joe Schwarcz, a McGill University chemistry professor, told NBC that chip bags are filled with nitrogen, which cushions the chips during shipping. Fred Caporaso, a Chapman University food science professor, said the inert gas also keeps chips from going rancid, as oxygen reacts with their oil. He added that the extra space stops chips from getting caught in the seal.
Under Food and Drug Administration rules, a package may include extra space when it protects the contents or is needed by the sealing machines. Chips are sold by weight, and federal law requires that weight to be printed on the bag. However, a single chip would likely fall well short of the weight printed on a Wavy Lay’s bag.
Shrinkflation usually shows up as a smaller printed weight. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found snacks among the most downsized categories, with potato chip packs shrinking from 4.5 to 4.25 ounces and some eight-ounce bags dropping to 7.5 ounces. Downsizing accounted for about 2.6 points of a 26.4 percent rise in snack prices from 2019 to late 2023.
The agency now tracks package size changes in a research index that runs alongside the Consumer Price Index, and its upcoming releases could show whether snack bags keep shrinking into 2027.
