Matthew Broderick went to Warren Beatty’s house for a quick, one-day meeting. Three months later, he still hadn’t left

The meeting never ended.

Matthew Broderick found himself in a unique situation while preparing for his role in the 2016 film Rules Don’t Apply. He recently shared that a simple, one-day meeting with Warren Beatty turned into a three-month residency at the filmmaker’s home. According to Page Six, Broderick jokingly referred to himself as a victim of the longest meeting ever. This unexpected living arrangement began when he traveled to Los Angeles for what was supposed to be a brief professional consultation.

During an October 22, 2026, appearance on the podcast Nepo, Baby!, Broderick described his initial state of mind before the meeting. He felt quite nervous about the encounter. The actor recalled driving up the hill toward Mulholland and having to pull his car over to the curb. He spent time waiting at a curb and sweating nervously before he finally arrived at the house.

He noted that Beatty appeared at the door wearing a white shirt and white pants. Broderick mentioned that he looked like Warren Beatty. He also noticed some burn marks on the face of the filmmaker and said these marks were the result of a procedure to have things burned off before filming started. Broderick recalled that this was good because it made the veteran actor and filmmaker look more human.

The evening started with a very pleasant dinner

Broderick explained that they did not talk about the movie for a long time. Eventually, Beatty handed over the script. Broderick was then placed in a room to read the material. By the time he finished, it was already late in the day.

After they finished discussing the film, Beatty invited him to stay the night rather than returning to his hotel. Broderick accepted the offer, but the next morning brought a new challenge. He found himself creeping around the house in an attempt to slip out quietly. His plan was thwarted when he ran into Beatty in the kitchen.

Beatty was busy making oatmeal when they crossed paths. Broderick tried to use a trip to the gym as a reason to leave the property. Beatty quickly shut that down by pointing out that they already had a gym at the house. The actor noted that he does not recall exactly when that specific meeting ended. The situation evolved because he ended up filming the movie while living in a small guest house on the property. He stayed there for three months.

Broderick said he never really left Mulholland

Rules Don’t Apply was directed and co-written by Beatty. The film featured a cast that included Beatty, Broderick, Lily Collins, and Alden Ehrenreich. Beatty’s wife, Annette Bening, also appeared in the film. The couple has been married since 1992 and shares four children. Broderick has his own family life, having married Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997 at a Manhattan synagogue. They share three children together.

This was not the first time the actor discussed his time at the Beatty residence. He shared a similar story during a 2019 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. Broderick described the experience as amazing during that interview. He noted that the initial conversation went on for so long that Beatty suggested he stay over. Once he woke up the next morning, rehearsal began.

Beatty informed him that there was a little house available for him to use. Broderick decided to move in because he did not want to move to a hotel. According to Entertainment Weekly, when asked about the food during his stay, Broderick confirmed that Beatty’s wife Bening often cooked pasta for them.
