Marvel’s Netflix Universe Truly Pays Off in The Defenders’ First Trailer

Recommended Videos

Marvel’s Netflix shows—individually and collectively—have had their ups and downs, but there’s a lot to love in this first full trailer for their team-up in The Defenders.

Do you want to see Iron Fists’s Danny Rand get some sense (a little, maybe) knocked into him by Luke Cage? It’s got that for you. Do you want to watch Jessica Jones glare incredulously at her male team members? That’s in there, too. Were you hoping for Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones to trade quips with each other? How about some Hallway Fighting™? Yep, all there—all boxes ticked. There’s also Claire Temple, the Marvel/Netflix universe’s unifying force.

Then, there’s Sigourney Weaver, the series’ Big Bad, who does not appear impressed by our ragtag team of heroes at all, which feels about right. All in all, everything seems set up just about how we’d hope, and now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if the execution lives up to it. The four different shows these heroes had on their own were very different, and that could either make for a lot of interesting character work or a mess that makes them all a bit more generic in order to serve a more standard, good vs. evil superhero story.

We’ll find out when the series debuts on August 18.
