Martha Stewart posed in rags with an ‘I am hungry help me’ sign in a post selling her QVC candles, and now she says it was meant to raise awareness

Let them eat cake.

Martha Stewart is navigating a wave of public criticism after a Halloween costume choice sparked significant backlash online. The lifestyle icon faced scrutiny after she posted a picture on Instagram where she appeared dressed as a homeless person. According to NBC News, in the image, Stewart wore tattered clothing and used makeup to create the look of dirt on her face. She also held a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

The photo was part of an Instagram carousel that also featured her candle collection for QVC. In the caption, she wrote, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!” The post was removed shortly after the backlash began, but the image continued to circulate on other platforms. Many observers labeled the costume as out of touch and dystopian, suggesting it mocked those living in poverty.

Stewart initially addressed the situation on Sunday, November 1, in a statement. She said, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.”

Stewart then went on to explain that she cares deeply about homelessness

“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic,” she added. She also stated, “I am committed to continuing to make a difference.”

Hours later, Stewart shared a follow-up statement on her Instagram account. She acknowledged that her initial explanation did not fully address the situation. “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” she wrote, per PEOPLE.

“My earlier statement didn’t go far enough.” She continued by saying, “I know many people are economically struggling. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I’m very sorry.”

The controversy did not end with the removal of the costume photo

On Monday, Stewart posted a carousel of a luxury spread of pastries and breads she received from a bakery in Brooklyn. According to Page Six, the post showed a variety of high-end baked goods, which she described as “Sooooo good!!!” This follow-up post drew further criticism from followers who felt the timing was poor. One user commented, “‘Let them eat cake,’ amirite?” Another person asked, “Guess she’s not hungry anymore?”

One commenter wrote, “Maybe you could deliver that bread to hungry people???” Another added, “Take those pastries out to the streets and feed the hungry humans in need of food.” Despite the negative comments, some supporters defended her. One user stated, “WE LOVE YOU, MARTHA! Ignore the cancel culture.” Another supporter mentioned, “She’s addressed the pic twice. Move on people.”

Stewart has long been known for her enthusiasm for Halloween. In 2024, she shared that it is a time she “looks forward to every year.” She noted that she enjoys the process of picking pumpkins and preparing for the holiday. “This year, my editors crowned me Queen of Halloween!” she said. “As they well know, I truly love to dream up a great costume and get in the spirit.”

Stewart is not the only public figure to face questions regarding Halloween attire this year

McCall DaPron, who is set to appear in the Orange County spinoff of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, also faced backlash for a costume choice. She posted a photo on Instagram dressed as Jackie Kennedy on the day of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Her husband, Kirk DaPron, was dressed as the late president. The couple also dressed their children as Secret Service agents and family members. DaPron captioned the post, “Happy Halloween ?The Kennedy’s,” before eventually deleting the content.

The situation surrounding Stewart highlights the tension between festive holiday traditions and public sensitivity. Stewart has built a massive career around home entertainment and lifestyle tips, making her a prominent figure in media.
