The season 1 finale of Marvel’s Moon Knight brought us some great moments for our favorite characters and did a great job of showing us just how powerful this character can be. It was a great episode for fans of Marc Spector and Steven Grant! Let’s talk about how their dynamic truly shined in the series as a whole and especially by the finale!
**Spoilers for the entire first season of Moon Knight lie ahead**
Spoiler alert: STEVEN GRANT IS BACK BABY! In the finale, the first thing we see is Marc Spector knowing that he can’t live an existence of peace in the Field of Reeds while knowing that Steven was taken by the Duat. Because while the show at large was about Khonshu and Marc trying to stop Harrow from freeing Ammit, it also was more about Marc and Steven’s journey to accepting each other and understanding how they can co-exist.
The show focuses on Steven Grant first, and we’re thrust into this world of Egyptian gods and Avatars through his eyes, but we slowly learn of Marc Spector and his connection to the god Khonshu. And tracking Steven and Marc’s relationship through the show, the two start off hating each other and slowly begin to rely on each other for guidance. Yes, it helped that they technically died and were forced by the god Taweret to examine what made their hearts “unbalanced” but it also came from a companionship. Whenever Marc needed him in the past, Steven was the one there to take the brunt of Marc’s trauma. So it’s only fitting that Marc becomes that for Steven too and the two found their own balance within each other.
That’s why the finale was so important to their journey. Marc is free to live out his existence in paradise, and yet, he goes back for Steven—not because he has to or that he has a sense of justice, but rather, it’s because he needs Steven to be there with him. The two have been through so much, and leaving him behind so that he could live in paradise clearly doesn’t sit well with Marc. He would rather succumb to the Duat than be without Steven Grant. That trust and love leads to the two having a new balance not only in the afterlife but also when they return to their body.
Harrow must be stopped
Marc and Steven were waiting for Layla to free Khonshu, and the minute that both Marc and Steven ran towards their freedom, Khonshu found them and “agreed” to let them be free after they stopped the now freed Ammit and Harrow. The episode ends in a fun Marvel epic fashion with Khonshu and Ammit fighting each other while looming over the fight between Harrow, Layla, Steven, and Marc. And just when things are dire, Marc blacks out and “someone” takes over and nearly kills Harrow.
But the fight itself is a tag team. It goes flawlessly between Marc and Steven in a show that proves to us, the audience, what Moon Knight had been leading towards: Marc and Steven working together. As a unit, they’re unstoppable, and we get to see that in action by the end of the series, and it instantly makes me excited for what the future holds for them.
But there’s another
The end of the episode also gave us (finally) a look at the third alter: Jake Lockley. It’s clear that their work with Khonshu isn’t done thanks to Jake but it will be interesting to see, in the future, how Marc and Steven adapt to a force like Jake who isn’t afraid of hurting whoever Khonshu asks him to. We don’t know when we’ll see Marc, Steven, Layla, or Khonshu again but god, I hope it’s sooner rather than later.
