Man looking for scrap metal in Canarsie, Brooklyn, finds a duffel bag on a sidewalk. Inside is the body of a 24-year-old Bronx church organist

Joseph Owusu’s family wants answers, as police have not publicly identified who left the 24-year-old Bronx man’s body in a duffel bag on a Canarsie sidewalk in Brooklyn. A person searching for scrap metal discovered the bag the morning before Halloween, according to ABC7. Police said they found it at the corner of East 93rd Street and Avenue L.

Surveillance footage from the overnight hours appears to show two people unloading a large black duffel bag from the trunk of a white sedan. The pair then seemingly drag it onto the sidewalk and drive away. No arrests have been announced in the case. However, Joseph Owusu’s brother, Kojo Yeboah, has been sending the clip to friends, hoping someone knows something.

Owusu served as the organist at his family’s church in the Bronx, and his brother described him as a dedicated musician who would play for hours to avoid a single mistake. He also reportedly supported people with disabilities while studying computer science. His family said he loved his faith and was loved by everyone.

His brother has watched the video over and over and still doesn’t know who those people are

Yeboah said he has replayed the footage many times, hoping to spot a clue about the pair. He said he does not recognize either of them. “No, I don’t recognize anybody. I wish, but those people just people I’ve never seen before,” Yeboah said.

The loss has left the family struggling to process what happened. Yeboah said it is hard to accept that his brother will no longer walk through the door to play the piano. He said he is trying to stay strong for their mother. However, he admitted he does not know how the family will fill the void.

Owusu’s relatives and Ghanaian officials identified him, and the family says it is focused on justice. “I need justice for Joseph. I want the truth to come out,” Yeboah said. He added that his brother did not deserve to die the way he did and still had “a lot of living to do.”

Nobody has said publicly how Joseph died yet

Police have not released a cause of death in Owusu’s case. His body was taken to the city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, as deaths that may have resulted from criminal violence or happened in a suspicious manner fall under the office’s jurisdiction, according to city records.

After an examination, the office issues a death certificate stating both the cause and manner of death. The cause is the injury or condition behind a death, while the manner is a classification such as homicide, accident, suicide, natural, or undetermined. However, the certificate can read “pending further study” while the office waits on test results.
