A Louisiana woman’s bizarre nine-minute blackout on an Alabama highway has gone viral, leaving thousands convinced she stumbled into a real-life “glitch in the matrix.” The story  shared by TikTok creator @ashleeinc in the popular spooky scary storytime format, details Lauren’s unsettling road trip experience where time seemed to warp, her phone malfunctioned, and a stranger’s cryptic warning left her questioning reality.

Lauren was driving from Louisiana to Fayetteville, Tennessee, in November 2025 to attend a relative’s funeral. Around 4 p.m., she pulled into a nearly deserted rest area in Alabama to stretch her legs and use the bathroom. It was there she encountered a man in his mid-50s who, after a brief conversation, repeatedly warned her, “Be safe. Don’t get lost.” The warning was oddly specific, delivered with an urgency that stuck with her long after she got back on the road.

After thanking him, ensuring he and a woman he was with did not need help with their car, and assuring him she wouldn’t get lost, Lauren got back on the road. Things took a strange turn almost immediately. While on a call with her best friend discussing the stranger’s warning, Lauren’s phone suddenly distorted, her voice echoing in static before the call dropped entirely.

Despite having full service, neither could reconnect for three minutes

When the call finally resumed, Lauren was stunned to see the same red car from the rest area speeding past her in the opposite direction — something that shouldn’t have been possible given the timeline. She was driving at a steady 70 mph, yet the couple was now hurtling toward the rest stop at 90 mph.

The weirdness didn’t stop there. Lauren described a stretch of highway that seemed to defy logic. Exits and signage she expected to see were missing, leaving her disoriented. Her best friend, still on the phone, asked where she was, but Lauren could only spot a single Love’s gas station, nothing else. Yet when she passed through the same area on her return trip, the highway was lined with exits, gas stations, and billboards.

This Spooky Scary Storytime/glitch in the matrix story came from Lauren: “In November 2025, I stopped at a nearly empty Alabama rest area on my way to a funeral. A stranger looked me dead in the eyes and said: “Be safe. Don’t get lost.” I then lost almost 9 minutes of driving time with no explanation after seeing the same stranger fly by on the interstate in the opposite direction. My friend heard the phone distortion too. I still think about that warning.” #UnexplainedStories #paranormal #TrueScaryStory

The most unsettling part? The nine-minute gap. Lauren’s call logs confirmed the timings, but she has no clue about the other strange occurrences. Her phone’s Bluetooth disconnected, her GPS acted erratically, and the entire experience left her questioning whether she’d imagined it all. The only thing she knew for sure was that the stranger’s warning felt genuine, like he knew something she didn’t.

The story, narrated by @ashleeinc in a May 13, 2026, TikTok video, quickly gained traction online. According to The Daily Dot, Ashlee, known for her atmospheric readings of paranormal and high-strangeness tales, has over 2 million followers and tens of millions of likes, making her the perfect storyteller for Lauren’s eerie account.

The video sparked a wave of reactions

Viewers were split between skepticism and belief. Some chalked it up to fatigue, GPS glitches, or Alabama’s notoriously confusing rural roads. Others shared their own stories of strange highway experiences, comparing Lauren’s tale to the TV series From or classic time-slip narratives.

Lauren’s story taps into a growing online fascination with ‘glitch in the matrix’ phenomena – moments where reality seems to hiccup, leaving people questioning what they just experienced. The idea that mundane road trips can suddenly turn surreal has captivated audiences across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, where users swap theories and personal anecdotes.

For Lauren, the experience was so unsettling that she still thinks about the stranger’s warning. She even mentioned that her location appeared to her best friend as “Utah, Alabama,” a detail that’s only added to the mystery.

The story has resonated with people who’ve had similar experiences

Some viewers pointed to Alabama’s history of strange highway phenomena, while others drew parallels to liminal spaces – those eerie, in-between places that feel just slightly off. Lauren’s experience, with its missing time and distorted reality, fits neatly into that category. Whether it was a glitch in the matrix, a trick of the mind, or something more supernatural, the story has struck a chord with audiences hungry for the unexplained.

Lauren’s takeaway? She’ll never ignore a stranger’s warning again, no matter how cryptic. And while she may never know what happened during those nine missing minutes, the experience has left her with a lingering sense of unease, and a story that’s captivated thousands.
