Following the success of the experimental 2017 film Loving Vincent, Good Deed Entertainment has released the trailer for their 2022 film, Charlotte. With Keira Knightley voicing Charlotte Salomon, the film appears to follow the Berlin-born artist during her time as an artist leading up to and during WW2.
Primarily remembered for her autobiographical series of paintings and drawings (almost 800 in 3 years), Salomon worked on her craft in Germany during the rise of the Nazi party before fleeing to southern France as laws for Jewish citizens became more strict in her home country. Because most of her work was created from 1941 to 1943, the oppression of Jewish people and others in the war became a central, heavy topic in her work.
Initially set to be a live-action, the animated feature was directed by Eric Warin and Tahir Rana. The cast features the talents of Jim Broadbent, Brenda Blethyn, Sam Claflin, Eddie Marsan, Sophie Okonedo, and Mark Strong. Producer Julia Rosenberg told Variety, “It’s a war story, it’s a refugee story, but it’s really a biopic of an artist who’s been overlooked. She invented the graphic memoir, she played with autofiction and did all of these conceptual things that are now widely used. She’s one of the great artists of the 20th century.”
Charlotte releases April 22.
