Japan Celebrates Opening Of Hollywood Godzilla With Gold And To-Scale Statues

What did America have? A Fiat ad?

In honor of Godzilla’s 60th anniversary and the Japanese release of the Hollywood reboot, the people of Tokyo have erected several statues in honor of the lizard, including a 1/7 scale Gojira in a public park and a ten-inch tall, 33 pound, solid gold figure that could be yours for “just” $1.47 million.

I’m impressed that Ginza Tanaka, the jeweler behind Goldzilla, assumes anyone would be willing to shell out that kind of money for a figurine. But if, like approximately the rest of the world, you can’t quite hack the statue’s price tag, Tanaka will have it on display in Tokyo and Osaka for the next two months. For the record, the 1998 Godzilla film cost about eighty-eight of these bad boys to make. That is a lot of tacky monster money.

If the Liberace of Godzillas isn’t appealing to you, Kotaku reports that a more anatomically “authentic” monster will be wreaking terror in Tokyo Midtown Green and Park from July 18th to August 31st. Twitter user synkdesign captured construction on the statue, which when completed will allegedly light up and spray water at night.
