I have admitted on numerous occasions that my knowledge of what goes on in comic books is fairly limited. There are a LOT of books to keep track of and, frankly, it can be a bit intimidating when you don’t know where to start. That being said, watching the stories on the big screen has increased my desire to dive into the books, and one concept that I’m really curious about is Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir and becoming Thor.
Enter the upcoming series Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor, which puts the legendary hammer in Jane Foster’s hands … even if it’s a bit of a rude way to get the hammer to her. You’ll see what I mean in the synopsis.
The synopsis
When Mjolnir comes crashing through Jane Foster’s apartment window, she fears the worst has happened to Thor. As Asgard’s greatest enemies—including Hela, Ulik the Troll, and Enchantress—mount an assault on the Golden Realm, Jane must find Thor and save Asgard—even if that means she must once again risk her life to become Thor herself!
The team
This isn’t the first story to have Jane take the mantel as Thor, nor is it the first time Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor writer, Torunn Grønbekk, has written Jane in such a role. Fans might recognize Grønbekk from her work on the Valkyrie series of comics that include Valkyrie: Jane Foster, King in Black: Return of the Valkyries, and The Mighty Valkyries. She’s also the writer behind Warhammer 40,000: Sisters of Battle, Wasterlanders: Doom, and the upcoming Captain Marvel Annual. Michael Dowling, who has worked on several issues of The Amazing Spider-Man and Black Cat, will be doing the artwork for the comic, and Ryan Stegman (Venom, Sabertooth, and Spider-Man 2099: Exodus) is behind the cover art.
The variant cover, which features Jane in a much softer art style, is by artist Peach Momoko. You might recognize Momoko’s art from the designs of the “you can never have too many Gwens” series Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse. Momoko’s also done art for the Demon Days series and Elektra: Black, White, & Blood.
The first issue of Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor will be released this June.
