It was a real treat to find out that Idris Elba played the bull ZPD police chief in Zootopia–I had no idea going into it that he would be there. But this Jungle Book clip featuring Elba as Shere Khan is perhaps a bit of a departure from the colorful, (mostly) friendly world of Zootopia (unconscious biases in the animal kingdom aside). Dubbed an “intro to Shere Khan,” this clip from the movie characterizes the scarred tiger very well in just over a minute.
What’s interesting about the clip is that it’s one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of audio from Jungle Book, which revealed an interesting quirk to me. There seemed to have been a decent amount of post-processing on Elba’s voice, making it (somehow) more rumbly and “heavy” than normal. I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly how different it sounded, but it definitely sounded a bit strange.
Not that I’m complaining or anything, it was just something I noticed. As well, the animation looks absolutely stunning. Everything from the fur on the wolves surrounding Mowgli to the splash of water that kicks up when Shere Khan stomps his paw is so well done. The movie promises to be a hell of a visual feast. Here’s hoping the rest of it holds up.
