Woman Goes on First Date With Hinge Match. At the End, She Decides To Delete All Dating Apps: ‘I Fear He Was Negging You’

Despite many people’s overall exhaustion with the dating world, first dates are, by definition, supposed to be nice. Having casual conversations over coffee and wine and getting to know one another typically give romance-seekers answers regarding overall compatibility. A light hug or even a parting kiss can be magical for some.

However, one woman had such a bad first date that she didn’t even need to debate whether she’d go on a second date. Margot Lee (@margot.lee) said she even canceled another date she was supposed to be on because the first left her feeling “so icky.”

Lee regaled her audience with the terrible, no-good date in a video with more than 891,000 views. Her audience agreed—the date was truly that bad.

What Happened On This Hinge Date?

Lee said she went on her first and last Hinge date.

She noticed that the person she was seeing indicated they wanted to go out to dinner via their prompts. Lee herself said she wasn’t a dinner person, especially for a first meeting, but she obliged.

From the get-go, there were bad signs. The place her date selected was, according to Lee, notorious in the worst way. Lee said her cousin warned her not to go to the restaurant her date picked out. So, she tried to give him signals that she didn’t want to go to the establishment. Her date completely missed every single one.

They decided to meet at the restaurant. Right before the date began, Lee texted the man she was seeing to let him know she was going to be five minutes late. They ended up seeing each other right outside the restaurant, and Lee noticed that he gave her outfit a good, hard look. He didn’t compliment her or say anything, really. He just stared.

They went inside and were led to their table. That’s when her date immediately tried to claim the seat Lee wanted. She swerved him and let him know she wanted the seat, which made it an awkward start.

It Gets Worse

The first conversation Lee and her date had at the table was a discussion of their careers. In the video, Lee said that she’s proud of her work. She let her date know that, too.

“I say that I do social media. His response to all of that is, ‘Oh, I don’t have Instagram,’ which also wasn’t true, ’cause later in the night he was on Instagram.  So kind of immediately just makes me feel, like, weird and [expletive] about my job,” she said.

The waitress came by and offered the pair some recommendations. Lee’s date ordered everything that the waitress did not recommend without consulting Lee. He included an anchovy dish in the mix, which Lee had specifically said she wasn’t interested in. Her date justified the order by saying he was in a fish mood. Lee said that in total, he almost exclusively ordered fish dishes without offering Lee an opportunity to select something for herself.

The waitress then explained that Lee’s date only ordered small dishes. She recommended that the pair order at least one additional menu item if they needed food, but her date said that he was not hungry. This frustrated Lee, as she did want something for herself.

Despite this, Lee asked for a tomato dish. After the waitress left, her date asked if he could send something on his phone. Lee agreed, and her date spent roughly five or seven minutes looking at it.

A terrible ending

After some time passed, Lee finally caved and asked what he was doing on his phone. Her date said he was looking for a file to send to someone, but he wasn’t able to find it.

As soon as food arrived at the dinner table, her date took out his phone again. She noticed prior to this that her date was a “terrible conversationalist.” He had an interesting career but didn’t seem to want to talk to her about it. Still, she tried to make conversation.

At one point, her date mentioned that he had been to Burning Man on a number of occasions. When she asked him what Burning Man was like, he told her to watch the HBO documentary about the festival.

“ Dude, we’re on a date. Like, help me out. I actually don’t give a [expletive] about Burning Man, but, like, we need to talk about something,” Lee said.

Then he started to complain about the food. He said the portions were too small and that the restaurant hustled them. Lee, however, mentioned that they went to a wine bar with small dishes. He also said that there had to be “3,000 calories” on their table, which Lee found inappropriate.

The man asked to pay with Apple Pay. Lee said that as they were leaving, the waitress stopped them outside. He didn’t tip, which Lee thought was deliberate. He then proceeded to get into an Uber, leaving Lee at the restaurant while hers arrived.

She cancels her remaining dates

The experience was sour for Lee, and it ruined the appeal of Hinge. She said she had another date planned. But the other person she planned it with wanted to go to a terrible area. For Lee, it didn’t seem like it was worth trying again.

“ Guys, I’m deleting the apps and I’m gonna give out acquaintance cards,” she said. “It’s more fun. It’s a better story. And anyways, I’m gonna spend this evening by myself and have a lovely night.”

What is negging?

In the comments section, viewers said that Lee’s date was negging her. 

“Some men purposely bully women on 1st dates to see what they can get away with,” one commenter said.

Another commenter added, “No offence but there are sociopathic guys out there who get a kick in acting like this intentionally. A sort of experiment to see where it takes them.”

Negging usually refers to a person giving another a backhanded compliment, according to Healthline. It’s considered an emotional manipulation tactic. Viewers also mentioned how negging is one of many red pill dating tactics used to manipulate women into feeling unconfident. Specifically, negging makes many women feel like they have something to “prove” to their partner. 

A few commenters said that dating apps are a hotspot for red pill tactics such as negging. For that reason, they pulled out of dating online altogether.

“So real for deleting the app. if the journey is not fun, i’d rather be single,” one commenter said.
