This supercut of fan reactions to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace really worries me. It’s not the horrid ’90s fashion or the strange, strange haircuts, no. What bugs me is how hopeful each and every one of them looks right before entering the movie.

As someone who went to the very first showing in her hometown, I was definitely one of those people, and I was definitely one of those folks at the end who thought, “Oh, that was pretty good!” But when denial left the building and truth began to settle in, I knew what these people undoubtedly know now: hype is dangerous. This may very well be the first time I’m coming to terms with the fact that there’s still a (hopefully small) chance that The Force Awakens could suck.

Here’s hoping we don’t echo this compilation in another 16 years because I don’t know if my heart can take another Phantom Menace-level bomb.
