Grand Admiral Thrawn Returning to Star Wars Canon

He'll appear on Star Wars Rebels as well as feature in a new book by Timothy Zahn.

Star Wars Celebration is proving to be a source for a plethora of exciting news; in addition to the awesome new Rogue One footage we got yesterday, we also have another announcement that a beloved character from the Star Wars Expanded Universe is making his way into the new Star Wars canon:

Grand Admiral Thrawn, who made a very memorable appearance in the first EU trilogy written by Timothy Zahn, will be appearing in season 3 of Star Wars Rebels. (The screenshot above is the first glimpse provided of his appearance in the show, courtesy of Star Wars Rebels‘ Dave Filoni.) The official Star Wars account tweeted out some announcements, including the news that the voice of Thrawn will be provided by someone related to a current actor in the Star Wars franchise:

Star Wars Celebration also offered fans a sneak peek at the upcoming book(!) that will feature Grand Admiral Thrawn and will be written by none other than Timothy Zahn himself and be released in 2017:

Those eyes. It’s really exciting to see an EU character become a part of the official franchise (which, essentially, erased a lot of the EU’s continuity with The Force Awakens) so maybe this is the first of many to come. What are your thoughts on this reveal?
