Over the years, couples who have held gender reveal parties, an event centered around revealing the sex of an unborn baby, have faced public scrutiny for different reasons.

This is partially because of the environmental damage they have caused, such as forest fires and water contamination. There are also societal implications of the celebration, with critics saying it plays into outdated ideas of sex and gender.

Recently, however, a couple who held a gender reveal party faced backlash for a different reason: not paying their decorator. One woman caught part of the incident on video and posted it to TikTok.

In her video, which has gone viral with over 5.3 million views, TikTok creator Cindy (@glamwithcindy01) filmed a couple walking toward their car carrying large items.

“You guys, so we are at the park because we’re celebrating a birthday. And these people,” she says, referring to the aforementioned couple, “they came to decorate for a gender reveal party that was right here.”

Cindy says that the couple who hired the decorators “didn’t give them a freaking penny for anything.”

Their reasoning, according to the TikToker, is that they didn’t like the setup and thought it was “ugly.”

“After the gender reveal, they just [expletive] left,” she says. “The guy had a freaking… anxiety attack, and his pressure went down.”

Cindy says the party seemed to be going well at first. “We were here since 2 p.m., before they even set up the balloons and everything,” she says. “We watched the gender reveal. They took pictures, they left, and apparently now they haven’t even… they didn’t pay them.”

She says something is holding the couple back from contacting law enforcement. “They don’t wanna call the cops because they don’t have papers,” she says.

While undocumented immigrants have the right to contact emergency services, there’s a real fear that it could lead to immigration proceedings, especially given recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities seen throughout the country.

Under normal circumstances, one could take legal action and file a claim in small claims court, or if the sum is substantial enough, file a lawsuit. However, for undocumented immigrants, involving the authorities may be threatening to their status. And that fear is not unfounded.

In 2018, for example, a man who called 911 to report a trespasser was turned over to federal immigration officials by police, as reported by NBC News.

Commenters Are Enraged

“So sad!” one user exclaimed. “They were probably counting on that money for groceries or rent.”

“Small business need to start asking for a deposit and full payment before the day off,” suggested another.

“Who are the couple?” asked a third. “I’m willing to pay them for their effort.”

“I understand you posted this to help, but let’s be mindful about SHARING people’s status,” another user chimed in. “Especially during these times.”
