The Final ‘Sonic 2’ Movie Trailer Is Really Serving Some Blue Justice

"You forgot one. Unstoppable."

After releasing the “Sonic Cut” of its trailer, which sped up the footage and spliced in some hilarious images, we now have what’s being called the “Final Trailer” for Sonic 2. The trailer gives us a better grasp of Robotnik’s newest diabolical scheme, how difficult this battle will be for Sonic and Tails, and Knuckles, who is definitely NOT here to make friends.

“Oh lord, there are two of them now.”

What should be a gorgeous, tropical backdrop to a wedding is interrupted by Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) crashing the event in a pile of snow. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is back, and he’s got “The Winter Soldier” helping him out, an echidna named Knuckles (Idris Elba) who doesn’t take too kindly to being called a porcupine.

While a lot of the clips in the trailer are ones that we’ve seen, there are some genuinely distressing moments added to give more context. We see that Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are there when the Death Egg Robot attacks, for example, and the all-out brawl between Sonic and Knuckles feels like it’s going to explode off of the screen.

Can I just say that this movie looks like it’s going to beat the shit out of Sonic? My poor boy is taking blows left and right! You really do get the sense that he is still very new at this, compared to Knuckles, who is a warrior trained to engage in combat. Honestly? This is a fantastic way to show the fights they’ve had in the video games—though of course, in the games, we were limited to jump attacks.

It’s not just Knuckles doing major damage

Sonic 2

While we knew that Robotnik was returning to cause trouble, this trailer reveals that he’s not just using his robots against Sonic and Tails. It looks like he’s actually using the power of the Master Emerald himself! He’s got glowing, green eyes and green bolts of energy that he’s firing off to destroy everything around him. He even flies!

This is a lot to have to go up against because it means that Robotnik is a threat with and without his tech. The real question is when in the movie is this emerald-fueled Robotnik going on the attack? Is it before or after the Death Egg Robot? Also, are the heroes going to have to deal with him being powered up like this AND Knuckles at the same time?!

Theories and general fangirling

Sonic 2

The music in this trailer makes me so happy. It sounds EXACTLY like one of Robotnik’s themes from the video games (personally, I kinda get vibes from this theme right here). Also? Little nods like Tom’s ring tone and Sonic snowboarding are a nice touch.

All that said, after watching this trailer I have even more questions than I had before. For starters, it looks like Knuckles comes through a ring portal, something that only Sonic had access to in the first movie. How did Knuckles get a hold of a ring? More importantly, it looks like this may be how Knuckles and Robotnik meet, as Knuckles steps into a world that looks like the mushroom planet Robotnik was stranded on.

My theory is that Tails was sent by Sonic’s mama owl, Longclaw, to find him, because Knuckles got ahold of a ring somehow. In the first film, we see the echidnas as adversaries to Longclaw and Sonic, which will make for an interesting confrontation when Sonic and Knuckles meet.

Especially when we get to this next part.

Sonic 2

This really looks like Longclaw and/or the owls are connected to the Master Emerald somehow. I know, from the video games, that Knuckles is the one who protects the emerald, but moments like this really make it look like something that the owls are connected to. Longclaw was in the first film for a brief moment—she had Sonic come to our planet for safety after being pursued by the echidnas—so it looks like we’re going to get some more information about her in this film.

Like. Is she even still alive?
