Donald Trump pushed into silence as media giants stage a pool blackout in protest of recent bans on White House access for major media outlets
Desperate times call for desperate measures
Following President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on media organizations, including CNN, MS Now, and Politico, in the form of bans from White House access, these organizations and many others are pushing back by adopting radical measures. One of the ways they are protesting against Trump’s measures is powerful enough to silence him.
According to Forbes, CNN was assigned to provide pool coverage on Monday. However, following Trump’s ban, the position was left empty, leaving CNN, CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC, who comprised the pool, to come up with an alternative. However, they decided not to come up with one. As a result, a significant amount of coverage that day featured no sound, including a video from a widely circulated White House event.
As a show of solidarity, several news outlets limited their coverage of Trump. C-SPAN, for instance, did not broadcast Trump’s helipad unveiling due to the absence of a TV pool feed. Additionally, the Washington Post announced it would hold off on publishing photos of the day’s events until midnight Eastern Time, describing it as part of a “collective effort” with photographers from other White House newsrooms to support outlets that had been banned.
Trump launched his own news platform
To control media narratives, the White House introduced Trump TV on Monday, a 24/7 streaming platform on YouTube. The announcement was made via a short introductory video uploaded to YouTube, featuring clips from several popular shows, including Breaking Bad, The Office, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, and Friends.
On Instagram, the announcement initially looked different, with the official White House page sharing an image of Trump with the caption, “Streaming 24/7. Live at 7 PM.” Later, however, the page shared the same video from YouTube, this time with a description. The caption read, “IT’S LIVE…TRUMP TV IS STREAMING NOW. 24/7, updated in real time, with top past moments, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration all in one place. Not every big moment has made it on your tv, now it can.”
On Monday, late at night, the official White House YouTube page uploaded the first video on behalf of Trump TV: a repeat telecast of Trump’s address at the World Economic Forum in January 2026, drawing instant criticism online. One of the people commenting on the matter was California Governor Gavin Newsom, a frequent critic of Trump.
On X, he wrote, “First, Trump banned independent news from the White House. Now, he’s launching what is quite literally state-run TV to try drowning out the fact that he and his corrupt administration are failing the American people. This is truly autocratic behavior from a failed President.” However, some people also extended support for the move, including Trump’s deputy assistant to the president, Kaelan Dorr, who promoted the channel.
