Donald Trump Jr. moving on with a lavish Bahamas wedding, reportedly funded by a Putin-linked oligarch: ‘Gift from a friend’
The fireworks faded. Something else lingered
Donald Trump Jr.’s lavish wedding celebrations already attracted plenty of attention. Now, months after the party ended, who reportedly helped pick up the bill is creating a very different kind of conversation.
The president’s eldest son and his wife, Bettina Trump, are not denying that a wealthy Russian businessman helped pay for their celebrations. Instead, they are defending the arrangement as an act of friendship, even as the identity of that friend raises questions about why such an expensive gift was offered in the first place.
According to NBC News, Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who has ties to President Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward festivities held in the Bahamas after Trump Jr. and Bettina married in May. The couple has now acknowledged his involvement, calling what he provided an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.”

Trump Jr. and Bettina married in a private ceremony on May 22 before continuing the celebrations with friends. The wedding itself had already become a spectacle, especially after Donald Trump skipped his son’s Bahamas wedding. But the latest reporting has shifted attention away from who was missing and toward one guest who was there.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses connected to the wedding weekend. That allegedly included renting one of the private islands used for the festivities and paying for a fireworks display. His team also reportedly helped plan parts of the event.
Trump Jr. and Bettina have pushed back on the idea that Kremlev paid for their actual wedding. In a joint statement posted to Bettina’s Instagram, they stressed that their ceremony had already taken place before the celebrations Kremlev hosted.
“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” they wrote. “It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.”
Bettina added that the weekend with friends had been arranged before their wedding plans changed. According to her account, they simply decided to marry before arriving for the already-planned trip as newlyweds.
The explanation has not stopped questions about Kremlev himself. He is president of the International Boxing Association and has a documented relationship with Putin. In April, Putin awarded him Russia’s Order of Friendship for his contribution to international sports. Ukraine has also sanctioned Kremlev, citing his connections to Putin and Russian security services.
Trump Jr. has publicly described Kremlev as a friend. The two appeared together at an International Boxing Association event in Turkey in September 2025, where Trump Jr. said he was “proud to call Umar not only a leader but a friend.”
The revelation adds a new layer to a wedding that was already creating unwanted attention for the Trump family. This time, however, the questions extend beyond the celebration itself.
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, questioned why someone with Kremlev’s connections would spend so much money on the president’s son. “What did he get in return? We need answers,” Garcia wrote on X.
There is currently no evidence that Trump Jr. provided Kremlev with anything in exchange for the spending. Bettina also rejected suggestions that the gift necessarily carried a political motive.
“Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda,” she wrote. “And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
President Donald Trump, who did not attend either the wedding or the subsequent celebration, dismissed the controversy. He said he had never heard of Kremlev and emphasized that the Russian businessman did not pay for the actual ceremony.
“It was an ‘afterparty’ given in their honor,” Trump said. “Not a big deal!”
