‘Do you even like her?’: TikTok questions mother who seemingly punished her daughter for wanting to move out
A mother who took to TikTok to share her controversial response to her daughter wanting to move out for college has been called out online after people claimed she was being too harsh on her child. The video has since sparked a conversation revolving around parenting and tough love, with some agreeing with the mother and others condemning her.
TikToker and mother Meredith Masony claimed that her 17-year-old daughter informed her and her husband that she intended to move out after her senior year “despite our urging her to got to a community college and finish her AA.” Meredith says her daughter told her, “She is almost 18 and a grown-up, and she can do adult things; she can live on her own.”
Sometimes teens need a reality check, so Meredith told her daughter to “figure it out.” The 17-year-old proceeded to research accommodations before coming back to her mother to tell her she’d found the dorm apartment she wanted to live in and asked her mother, “what do I do now”. Meredith claims she replied, “Why are you asking me? You’re an adult; figure it out.”
Meredith’s daughter returned and expressed anxiety over having to call to enquire about accommodation, but the mother wasn’t letting up, claiming it was a “teachable moment.” She told her daughter, “If you are a grown-up, and you are an adult, and you are ready to live on your own, you need to be ready to call people and have phone conversations.”
TikTok questions the tough love
Many of Meredith’s viewers disagreed with her approach to the situation, claiming she was being too harsh as a parent. “What you’re doing is just pushing her away slowly,” wrote one person who claimed to be a therapist. “This will teach her that you aren’t there to support, help, or care for her.”
Another claimed that their parents took the same approach and refused to offer them support, ultimately pushing them to go no contact with their parents as an adult. Others simply asked Meredith, “Do you even like her?” and “Why do you hate her?”
In a second video, Meredith doubled down and told viewers, “You can have your opinion, but my job is not to be a friend to my 17-year-old, almost-18-year-old daughter; my job is to let her know that she needs to have a plan.”
Some viewers agreed with the mother’s stance, claiming that others were blowing it all out of proportion. “People are so overdramatic,” claimed one person. “This is a natural consequence at its finest.” Another said, “Mom is 100% right,” and a third wrote, “I can tell every single person in the comment section who has kids.”
However, the majority seemed to disagree with Meredith, claiming that the mother was only refusing to help her daughter because she wasn’t doing what she wanted her to do.
