‘That is a CLEAR sign not to drink from that’: Chicago woman buys water bottle from Primark. Then she puts it in the dishwasher

Years since the Stanley Cup craze, water bottle tumblers still remain extremely popular. Nearly every retailer has some form of them in various brands, colors, and sizes making them convenient and sustainable. But how durable are they if they run through the dishwasher? If this thought has ever crossed your mind, one woman has the answer by revealing the aftermath of the water bottle she believes she purchased at Five Below.

What’s Wrong with This Tumbler?

“Guess what this is?” Chicago-based TikTok creator Britt (@brittdri) asks, holding what appears to be a skinny pink beaker with white measurements.

“So, I had a water bottle that I bought from Five Below and I put it in the dishwasher.” Initially, she didn’t recognize the object. “I’m thinking this is the insert where you can ice it,” she says.

Upon further inspection, it proved her wrong. “Tell me why I [pulled] this out of the dishwasher and I actually look at it. I realized this is the water bottle. The water bottle shrunk,” the content creator says, bursting into laughter.

Needless to say, Britt imparts to over 276,000 viewers in the caption, “So dont put your @5below water bottle in the dishwasher.”

Viewers Found The Blunder Comical?

Many in Britt’s comments section laughed and cracked jokes at her expense.

“I need to be a water bottle in the dishwasher by this summer,” one viewer commented.

“Turned into a graduated cylinder,” another jested.

“now it’s a liquor bottle,” a third quipped.

“Dishwasher must be set to dehydrate,” a fourth joked.

“I definitely thought it was a slim purse water bottle,” a fifth stated.

Where Did She Buy The Water Bottle?

Britt clarified she actually purchased the water bottle at a different store: “OK, I lied. I did not get it from Five Below. I got it from Primark,” she said in a follow-up video, showing a photo of the 1L (33oz) pink frosted plastic bottle in the bottom left corner.

However, she clarified it was an honest mistake. “I bought it so long ago. I don’t remember when I bought it. Don’t remember if it said ‘dishwasher safe’ or not,” she explained, cringing at the thought. “But yeah.”

The Saga Continues

In the next update clip, Britt embarked on another adventure. “So, I went back to Primark and I got one,” she said, unveiling a purple water bottle while sitting in her car. “I looked and it does say ‘not dishwasher safe.’”

As a result, all of the ideas viewers proposed in her original comments section were out the window. “It also says ‘not suitable for hot or alcoholic drinks,’” she said. “So, everybody saying, ‘Use it for a test tube or use it for a shot,’ I don’t know.”

In spite of the viral mistake, she intended to conduct some experiments. “I bought two more because I am going to shrink one of them,” she paused before adding. “For science.”

Why Aren’t These Cups Dishwasher Safe?

In a nutshell, the heat from the water can damage the cup. Not only can it destroy the seals, but it can also destroy the airspace to retain insulation, thus its ability to retain fluid temperatures, according to Allrecipes. Besides functionality, it can ruin its appearance by creating cracks and discoloration. Before tossing your precious tumbler into the appliance out of habit, check for the ‘dishwasher safe’ label. Even if it has the mark of approval, proceed with caution.  Instead, use a sponge to handwash it with soap and water to preserve it.

Update Mar. 20, 2026

During an interview with The Mary Sue, Britt revealed she bought this Primark bottle roughly two years ago. This was the first time she’s ever put it in the dishwasher. She theorized that the temperature setting caused the bottle to shrink.

“My hot water heater is on the highest setting. I have no idea what the water temperature in the dishwasher is,” she shared via Instagram direct message.

Although she intends to buy more tumblers, this specific material she plans to avoid.

“I’ll continue but probably metal or glass. I bought that in a hurry on my way to the gym,” she said.

As a result, this mistake has opened the door for some water bottle tumbler test trials.

“The experiment I’m thinking of doing is putting some plastic bottles in the dishwasher to see if more shrink,” the content creator revealed.

Now, viewers want in to bathe in her dishwasher for their summer bodies.

“I honestly didn’t expect the video to go viral. Now everyone wants a wash in my dishwasher to shrink for the summer,” Britt said.
