Democratic Congressional Hopeful Allegedly Brandished Knife in Beach Altercation Before Getting Knocked Out by Bystander
Allegedly, this isn't Basin's first confrontation with the public.
What was supposed to be a relaxing beach day turned into a commotion when a U.S. House candidate was allegedly caught on camera involved in a violent confrontation before being taken into custody. Kirill Basin, a 40-year-old Democratic candidate gunning for the Second Congressional District in Hawaii, is accused of threatening and attacking beachgoers over disagreements.
According to a Hawaiian news outlet, the incident occurred around August 1, 2026, at the Mana Kai Maui hotel located on Keawakapu Beach. The Maui Police Department reportedly responded to the disturbance and reported that the incident began when a 61-year-old beachgoer requested that Basin lower the volume of his music.
Reports alleges that Basin then threatened the beachgoer by implying that he was carrying a firearm, and that he would fire the weapon at the beachgoer’s wife. A bystander allegedly intervened amid the confrontation, which led to a physical altercation.
Basin allegedly threw his knife into the waters mid-confrontation
In the physical altercation, Basin allegedly brandished a knife and proceeded to threaten several people on the beach. Prior to police arriving on the scene, Basin allegedly threw the knife into the ocean before a bystander retrieved it and surrendered it to the responding officers.
The drama ended when a bystander, whom the NY Post identified as Kama Homan, dodged an attack with a chair and knocked out the congressional hopeful. Homan tried to rouse Basin before giving him a tongue-lashing.
Basin was arrested on two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $1 million in a courtroom appearance in Wailuku. The 40-year-old was accompanied by his lawyer, Brandon Segal, who claimed that “These are just allegations. My client has a presumption of innocence,” and reportedly described the bail amount as outrageous.
Basin allegedly has had more confrontations since May
This beach incident wasn’t Basin’s first controversy. Basin has reportedly been taken into custody on previous cases involving property damage and assault since May, resulting in temporary restraining orders filed against the Democrat.
Thomas Cook, a County Council member in Maui, was reportedly one of the people who filed a restraining order against Basin, alleging that he had disrupted one of his meetings back in May and was confrontational, aggressive, and threatened violence.
In June, Basin is reported as harassing registered psychiatrist Dr. James McKinnon, and assaulted Maui Memorial Medical Center nurse Fred Saranillio. It was claimed that another man identified as Messiah Manalili was harassed; however, the details of the incident remain unclear.
Basin reportedly pleaded not guilty to two counts of misdemeanor harassment and a count of felony assault. On June 15, prosecutors brought up his charges again after initially dismissing it without prejudice.
Basin is currently gunning for U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda’s congressional seat under the Hawaii Democratic Party with “Fight. Aloha.” as his slogan. But with the multiple allegations stacked against him, Basin might have to end his electoral run.
