Daredevil Recaps: “World on Fire” and “Condemned”

And now on to “Condemned!” Of course, because we’re not even halfway through the first season, the cops neglect to immediately pull off Daredevil’s mask while he lure them in and—when he’s sure they’re working for Fisk—beats them senseless, throws some more guns, and carries Vladimir off into the night.

“See? I told you throwing is better.”

Anyone‘s senses can detect the smell of your bullshit, guys.”

And Foggy, Karen, and Mrs. Cardenas continue the world’s worst first date in the hospital.

“This little wound? That’s nothing next to the pain in MY HEART.”

Daredevil calls Claire up to help him give medical attention to Vladimir, and she’s very happy to hear from him… considering what Vladimir had done to her a few episodes back.

“I KNOW you’re kidding me right now.”

But she helps him keep Vlad alive for information by cauterizing Vlad’s wounds rather painfully, which is a little added bonus for her trouble.

Daredevil tells the fairly wounded Vlad he wasn’t the one who killed his brother, but that doesn’t stop Vladimir from monologuing about how he and Daredevil aren’t that different—kind of a running theme if you hadn’t noticed—and fighting back pointlessly. That turns out to not be such a great idea in the rundown old building, and they wind up falling through several floors together.

“I’m not so sure this is—structurally speaking—the best time for you guys to work out your differences.”

“I’m just gonna take a break here for a minute. Cut to Ben or Karen and Foggy or something, OK?”

Actually, Karen and Foggy’s date seems to have improved in the hospital in the meantime, and they share a bit of a moment in which Karen says she’s had worse ones. Maybe she’s counting the time she went out for drinks with a guy and then got framed for his murder?

Fisk contacts Daredevil on a police radio he picked up in a plot point I skipped here for brevity, and they have a drawn out conversation to make sure everyone’s keeping up with the parallels between their characters. Daredevil refuses to take Fisk’s offer to kill Vladimir and walk away, and he insists they’re not the same.

“Fisk? Hello? … Dammit.”

The police move in, and Vladimir finally decides to make himself useful in their escape as Fisk has his media contacts smear Daredevil all over the news and blame the explosions and shooting of cops on him, which leaves Karen skeptical and Foggy firmly in the anti-DD camp.

Before Daredevil and Vlad team up to rip open a grate and escape into some convenient access tunnels beneath the building they’re in, he calls Claire to tell her she wasn’t actually wrong about him, and they make up, and they can totally be in love and stuff.

AND EVERYTHING’S GOING TO BE FINE, OK?

After Daredevil beats up a few cops that follow them into the tunnels, Vlad decides he’s going to die anyway and gives up Leland Owlsly’s name to get revenge. He also adds to the pile of ominous warnings about what Daredevil’s going to need to do to stop Fisk, but Matt’s mind is more made up than ever that he can win without stooping to his nemesis’s level.

Vlad stays behind to hold off the rest of the police before he bites it, while Daredevil struts purposefully along the tunnels towards the next episode.
