She went to the hospital after 13 days of constipation. Then, the nurses allegedly ignored her plight: ‘I’m just surrounded by mean girls’

Shurae Thomas (@shuraethomas) went to the emergency room after being constipated for thirteen days. Despite urgently needing help, Thomas told TikTok that the nurses who were supposed to attend to her ignored and neglected her.

When she arrived, Thomas claimed the nurse looked at her rudely and asked, “What are you here for?” Thomas explained what was wrong and added that she had tried Dulcolax and MiraLAX. The nurse allegedly replied in a sarcastic tone, “That’s it?” Thomas told the nurse that it was all she had available at home. In response, the nurse asked if she hadn’t tried an enema at home.

“I have chronic gastritis. I have mild gastroparesis. I’m in pain every day of my life,” Thomas said. The whole time she was there, Thomas claimed that the nurses were being mean to her. Like this patient who was allegedly ignored by healthcare staff while having chest pains, Thomas was in a relatively similar situation. To make matters worse, she accused one of the nurses of leaving her arm to swell.

“And the other nurse, she put my IV in, and she was like, ‘I don’t know if I got you or not.’ And I didn’t know what she meant by that,” Thomas said. The nurse left for a while, and Thomas had an IV line inserted in her without the bag. She assumed the nurse hadn’t inserted it properly because her arm had been swelling. Thomas claimed that when she moved her hand, it would hurt because it felt tight. “I don’t know what she did, but the bruising just keeps spreading through my arm,” she alleged.

Alleged mistreatment from the nurses

Thomas was brought in for a CT scan, and they confirmed that she was constipated. Although Thomas noted that the doctor was nice, she saw him only once, and that was before the CT Scan. After that, she didn’t see him again. Regardless, the nurse gave her an enema, then told Thomas to wait.

“And they just acted like I was such a problem, and I cried to myself in there, because I’m just like, I feel like I’m in high school again, you know? And I’m just surrounded by mean girls,” Thomas said. She emphasized that these nurses were supposed to be caring for patients. However, Thomas believes she experienced the opposite. In one observation, Thomas said that while she was in the waiting room, ‘code blue’ came through the PA system. Then, when she went into the emergency room, ‘code blue’ allegedly went off again.

“By the time I left the hospital, I understood why there were multiple ‘code blues.’ It had nothing to do with the patient. It’s absolutely the staff just being negligent and not caring,” she alleged. Even after she was given an enema, Thomas said it wasn’t effective. She was allegedly told to wait ten minutes, but she ended up waiting an hour before asking the nurse if she could leave.

Thomas waited another two hours for the second enema. But when she walked out, she said the nurses changed shifts. She alleged that the new nurse and the doctor were not informed that she even had her first enema.

Not a small issue

To make matters worse, she stayed for six hours in the hospital. Thomas claimed that her blood pressure was dropping to unacceptable levels. Whenever the machine alerted the nurses, one would come in, allegedly shut it off, and leave. Despite having stayed for so long in the hospital, Thomas said she left without having her issue resolved.

“The fact of the matter is, my body is like shutting down, and people don’t get it,” Thomas tearfully said. She explained that for the past year, her body weight has been dipping, even though she couldn’t expel food from her system. She fears that she could develop bigger intestinal issues because of her condition.

“Your job is not to show your little badge to everybody in the neighborhood so you can feel this certain stature. Your job is not just to make a big paycheck,” Thomas commented. She argued that nurses and doctors should prioritize caring for people. But Thomas isn’t the only one who was failed by the system, as another woman from Dallas described the lack of help her son received as he suffered from mental health issues.
