College student from Atlanta turns in a five-page paper to her professor. She says her art professor used AI
The paradox of an art teacher allegedly using AI to check papers.
Celeste (@ce1e2t3), a junior college student from Atlanta, stayed up for a five-page paper. Despite her best efforts, the student alleged that her art professor used AI to check her work.
“I have two majors: one in chemistry and one in psychology,” Celeste told TikTok. She also has a minor in sociology and is required to take a fine art subject. Among the options, Celeste chose Intro to Art, which she was eager to take.
“During this class, we were assigned a five-page essay—a true, five-page essay, to those of you wondering. No double-spaced, twelve font,” she said. Although she didn’t specify the document format, Celeste emphasized that it was a long essay. However, she had no complaints about the additional task.
“I love literature—was my best class all throughout high school, so I don’t care about all this,” Celeste clarified. She added that she enjoyed her visit to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and recommended others to stop by. Celeste continued, “I recommend it if you would like to see paintings from anybody other than a white man. It’s free for students sometimes, and at the end of the month.” It’s evident that she admires art, and she claimed she was proud to submit her five-page essay to her professor.
“I turn it in at the end of the semester, comes back a few days later, very clearly, very obviously graded using AI,” she alleged. Celeste expressed that she was upset. While she said she wasn’t the type to fight their professor for points, she was disappointed by her professor’s alleged AI use.
“So bothered that I almost emailed the head of the department to complain about that [expletive],” she continued. However, she has not yet lodged a formal complaint.
AI invading academia
“Oh, well, the professors are only using AI because the students are using AI. Oh, well, the professors don’t have time to grade 600 students’ five-page essays,” Celeste puts out the theoretical arguments for checking papers with AI. However, she countered these arguments immediately by saying she didn’t care.
“If you didn’t have enough time to grade the assignments you assigned, don’t assign the [expletive] assignment!” she says, disgruntled by her supposed discovery. Celeste said her professor has a PhD in art, a bit of information that pushed the student further against her teacher.
She added, “I’m sorry, but what do I pay you for? Through my taxes, right? I pay this institution about four grand a semester with no help!” It’s not just students who are dealing with AI as an issue—the new technology has become a problem in some human relationships. One woman says she thought she was speaking to her friend, then an AI chatbot suddenly inserted itself into their chats and impersonated her friend. In Celeste’s case, however, she believes her professor chose to use AI to grade her paper.
Celeste also flamed other coursemates, whom she believes are using AI for classes. She adds, “I’m so sorry if I don’t find it funny when I ask you if you want to study together, and you go, ‘I’m just gonna ask ChatGPT.'”
“I’m sitting in the same class as you. I’m taking notes on the same [expletive] as you, and you’re sitting here, asking me, wondering how I got a better grade? Oh, I used my brain!” Celeste said, showing a pile of notebooks. But resistance against AI isn’t happening just among students. One artist from Michigan is doing her best to keep AI art off Etsy through a diabolical scheme.
