Star Wars’ Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) Teases a Big Announcement on Twitter

*Unintelligible roar.*

As you can see in the tweet above, Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, fresh off reprising his role in The Force Awakens, is tweeting pages from his original Star Wars script in the run up to a “big announcement.” Unfortunately, figuring out what he means is like trying to understand Wookiee. Quick! Someone call Han.

So far, that’s all the information we’ve got, which leaves things wide open to speculate wildly. Will Chewie make a cameo appearance in the standalone Rogue One later this year, which is set to tell the story of the rebellion’s theft of the plans to the first Death Star? Rumors have been floating around that Han will somehow pop up in the prequel (hey, maybe this movie could save that word for us) ahead of his solo film, and Chewie would likely be at his side.

Or, since Mayhew is tweeting pages to his original script, maybe the announcement is regarding the original trilogy. With George Lucas out of the picture, Disney could easily do a rerelease of the original Star Wars movies true to their original form. Could we finally be getting a remastered release of the original trilogy without all the CGI meddling that went on with them in more recent years? The demand is definitely there, and fans have already taken it upon themselves to do something similar, so it seems more likely than not that it’ll happen at some point. Whether that’s something they’d let Mayhew announce on Twitter, though, is questionable. (Although he didn’t specifically say that he’d be making the announcement exclusively.)

GamesRadar also points out that Mayhew’s name wasn’t in the recent cast announcement for Episode VIII, so his announcement could be his retirement from the franchise, since his health was already an obstacle to his return in The Force Awakens. That’s more of a sad announcement than a “big announcement,” though, so I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll be treated to something a little more exciting. What are you hoping for? Let us know in the comments.
