‘Can’t even’: Man spends $168 on a birthday dinner at Disney Springs. Then the surprise arrives on an empty plate

A $168 birthday dinner should come with a decent ending. However, one man celebrating at Disney Springs got a surprise that nobody at his table seemed prepared for.
Even an expensive birthday dinner can go wrong, but this one ended in an especially strange way. There was no special request involved, yet what arrived at the table immediately got people laughing.
TikTok creator Maddie Brewster (@maddiebrewster_pt) shared the moment from Frontera Cocina in Disney Springs. Her video has 86.8K views, and the birthday surprise left viewers with one obvious question: Was that really it?
This wasn’t the birthday surprise anyone expected
In Brewster’s video, restaurant staff can be heard singing “Happy Birthday” before placing a plate in front of the man. In the middle was a single lit candle. There was no cake, ice cream, or anything else to eat.
The people at the table immediately started laughing. “I hope you’re hungry for nothing,” someone joked as the man looked at the plate. Brewster laughed at the unusual sight, saying, “I’ve never seen anything like that.”
She addressed the situation in the video’s caption. “When you spend $168 at Disney Springs for your birthday dinner and can’t even get a bite of cake,” she wrote.
The empty plate also left viewers wondering whether there was an explanation. One commenter asked, “I don’t get it. Do you have dietary restrictions? Or did you say it’s your birthday, and that’s what they brought out for you?” According to Brewster, there were “no dietary restrictions.”
She explained that they had told the restaurant they were celebrating his birthday. Staff later came over singing and brought out the plate with the candle. Despite the unusual surprise, Brewster did not blame their waiter and described him as “so nice.”
Frontera Cocina is located at Disney Springs, but it is not owned or operated by Walt Disney World Resort. It is operated by Chef Rick Bayless’ restaurant group and is one of the third-party restaurants at the shopping and entertainment complex.
The restaurant’s menu also shows what a dessert would have cost. Frontera Cocina lists soft serve for $7, while Mexican vanilla soft serve on the kids’ menu costs $3. Even the $7 option would have added only about 4% to the $168 bill.
That price difference helps put some of the reactions into context. Several viewers thought something small could have accompanied the candle. “Even a scoop of ice cream with a candle would be fine,” one person commented.
Another viewer was more surprised by the entire situation, writing, “This is so depressing, why would they do that??” Someone else added, “That’s insane. I’m offended for you.”
Others found humor in the completely empty plate. “If someone brings me a lit candle with no cake I’m gonna assume they want me to use it to burn the place down,” one commenter joked. Another person made a Disney-related joke, writing, “I guess ‘don’t be our guest’?”
One viewer shared a very different birthday experience at Disney Springs. “That’s actually insane—I went to Disney Springs for my bday dinner in February and I was given a HEFTY slice of cake that they even packaged up for me because I was full,” they wrote. “I also got a little scoop of ice cream with Mickey sprinkles at EVERY Disney restaurant.”
Birthday cakes can cause their own problems at restaurants. Even bringing your own cake to a restaurant can turn an otherwise simple celebration into an issue. In this case, however, nobody seemed to be asking for an elaborate birthday dessert. After a $168 dinner, even a small bite of cake apparently would have done the job.
