Bride revokes a wedding invitation after a guest mocks the cost and he’s only attending for free food. Now her bridesmaid is threatening to drop out.
Something borrowed, something blue, someone uninvited.

A bride is reconsidering one of her wedding invitations after her bridesmaid’s boyfriend repeatedly mocked the event, questioned how much it cost, and announced that he was mostly attending for the free food and alcohol.
The bride explained on Reddit’s r/aitaweddings that the bridesmaid has been one of her closest friends for years. Her friend’s boyfriend, on the other hand, has spent the past several months making jokes about the wedding being “too expensive” and accusing the couple of wasting money on “one day.”
Initially, the bride ignored the remarks because she didn’t want unnecessary drama. Then, during a recent gathering, he offered unsolicited comments on the wedding again, and that was enough to trim the guest list.
His jokes eventually cost him his invitation
According to the bride, the bridesmaid’s boyfriend joked that he was attending mostly for the free food and alcohol. Then he added that he would probably leave early because weddings are boring. Aside from the commentary that the bride attempted to laugh off, he asked how much the couple was spending on the celebration. When she refused to disclose the amount, he allegedly told her she’d probably regret spending the money when it could have gone toward something “useful.”
“That one actually hurt,” she wrote. The bride explained that she and her fiancé have saved for the wedding themselves and haven’t asked anyone else to pay for it. After months of planning an event that means a great deal to them, she no longer felt comfortable inviting someone who repeatedly mocked it. Later, she spoke privately with her bridesmaid and revoked the boyfriend’s invitation while stressing that she still wanted her friend at the wedding.
Now the bridesmaid might drop out
Her friend became upset and reportedly accused her of forcing her to choose between her boyfriend and her role as a bridesmaid. She also defended his comments as jokes and suggested the bride was taking them personally because she was stressed about the wedding.
The bridesmaid is now considering dropping out completely, leaving her friend wondering whether she should tolerate her boyfriend for one day rather than potentially lose a longtime friend.
Redditors were split into multiple camps over that question, although many thought the boyfriend had crossed a line. One commenter argued that the bridesmaid should have shut down his remarks herself, while another suggested the bride let him attend to preserve the friendship.
The bride subsequently acknowledged that keeping her friend matters more to her than excluding the boyfriend. She said that if her bridesmaid can convince him to “tone it down,” she would consider putting him back on the guest list and simply keeping her distance during the wedding.
Another commenter looked at the situation from a whole new angle. “How much you want to bet his comments are not directed to you but to your bridesmaid to warn her about his attitude towards weddings and spending money for them?”
Historically speaking, weddings have rarely come without some drama on the side. One woman dropped out of her best friend’s wedding after being asked to settle a $350 “wedding fee,” while another woman was left wondering whether she was actually invited to a wedding her boyfriend planned to attend.
For now, the Reddit poster appears to be wondering whether she was wrong for revoking the wedding invitation or had simply spent too long ignoring the disrespect because she didn’t want to be seen as a “difficult bride.”
