Woman travels to visit her boyfriend’s family. Then he gets a first-class upgrade and leaves her in economy: ‘the beginning of the end’

The seat upgrade seems to have downgraded the relationship.

Getting upgraded to first class sounds like a lucky break during a flight. For one woman, watching her boyfriend take that upgrade while leaving her behind in economy instead became an early sign that their relationship was headed for its final destination.

The woman was traveling with her then-boyfriend to visit his family when he received the upgrade, according to Fox News. Because he frequently traveled for work, he had airline status and regularly accumulated points and upgrades.

When the upgrade came through, she expected him to at least offer her the first-class seat. Instead, he accepted it himself while she remained in economy class.

It wasn’t really about sitting in economy

The woman made clear that flying economy itself wasn’t what bothered her. Rather, it was what her boyfriend’s decision appeared to reveal about their relationship. “It’s not the seat, it’s the principle,” she said, describing the incident as “the beginning of the end” of their relationship.

Strangely enough, this isn’t the first relationship to hit turbulence over nearly the same seating arrangement. Earlier this year, another woman discovered her boyfriend booked himself first class on their red-eye flight from California to New York while leaving her in economy plus. Her boyfriend responded to being confronted with a sheepish “I love you,” while commenters sentenced him to what she jokingly called “boyfriend jail.”

Another couple encountered a different kind of air travel relationship problem when a woman trusted her boyfriend to handle their flight. Only after booking did she discover he’d accidentally sent her a different flight, leaving the pair traveling separately and arriving 10 minutes apart.

The first-class debate divided commenters

The latest first-class dispute triggered more disagreement over what the boyfriend should have done. Some commenters said they would have simply declined the upgrade to remain seated with their partner.

Another commenter who identified herself as a flight attendant said she calls out male passengers who mention that their wives are sitting farther back in the plane. The commentary continued in a similar fashion, as another social media user reportedly said: “Any real man would let his wife have first class.” On the other end of the board, people questioned why the boyfriend should have been expected to give up his upgrade.

For this couple, at least, the first-class seat appears to have become something bigger than extra legroom. The woman wasn’t asking the internet to decide whether economy class was tolerable. Instead, it was the principle in that moment that took her aback.
