A woman let her boyfriend send her the link to a flight she needed to book. Then, she realized that a flight mix-up was going to put her on a completely different flight from him, landing 10 minutes after he did.

TikToker Mălina Petean (@anamariapetean6) posted what seemed like a humorous video about her boyfriend. The couple planned an outing together, which involved a flight. She ended up letting him send over the information for her booking, and she made a reservation, thinking she’d be on the same plane as him. Then, they realized he had sent over a completely different flight after she had already booked a ticket.

“Apparently, the same has a 10-minute margin of error,” Petean said in her TikTok with over 4.8 million views. The mistake wasn’t major, as she would land around 10 minutes after he did. Her commenters, though, thought that his misculation that placed her on a separate flight wasn’t very humorous. Instead, they argued that it was a red flag that the couple didn’t just book together or even plan accordingly to travel together.

Commenters don’t get the couple’s actions—or flight plans

Many commenters simply did not understand why Petean and her partner made their travel plans the way they did. Many couples simply book flights together and send money to one person if needed. Even couples earlier in their relationship do this as a means of avoiding any complications or flight errors.

“I cannot for the life [of me] understand why you need to book your own flight,” one commenter said. “Send him the money if necessary but book it at the same time.”

Another commenter added, “If it was that big of a deal just buy the tickets together? This is such a non issue.”

The fact that the couple booked separately created a weird amount of distance between them, at least according to many viewers. Traveling together has an implicit message—it’s a relationship test and something that shows how a couple can interact in a joint partnership.

Is a flight mix-up really that deep?

The lack of attention to detail and planning ended up costing the couple an opportunity to sit next to each other—or even be on the same plane—which irked Petean. Multiple viewers, however, said that the 10-minute wait wasn’t even “that deep” and that it wasn’t worth the hassle.

The lack of attention to detail, though, can immediately signal a lack of care. In relationships, couples who make bids for connection with one another are statistically more likely to stay together. Something as simple as a touch or eye contact can be a “bid for connection.” Thoughtfulness in general is considered part of “bidding” or continuing to fight for one’s relationship. In contrast, moves that push a partner away—even if it’s not deliberate—have an opposite effect.

Psychologist John Gottman, who introduced the idea, also dictated that relationships should have a 5-to-1 ratio. For every negative experience a couple has, they should have five positive ones. Carelessness is a negative experience in itself, and it’s one that can very quickly turn a positive relationship into a negative one.

It’s impossible, though, to understand or paint a picture of what Petean’s relationship is actually like. A humorous post joking about a flight booking error might be innocuous when compared to the greater whole.
