Black woman’s birthday lunch ended with a server calling them out over no tip. Then the server wouldn’t let her fix it: ‘Just be blowing me’
A birthday lunch should end on a good note. However, one Black woman says a family member’s decision at a Virginia Thai restaurant led to an awkward exchange before they could leave.
She wasn’t happy with her relative either. Leaving nothing for the server bothered her, but confronting diners over a disappointing tip made the situation even more uncomfortable.
According to TikTok creator astoldbyindie (@astoldbyindie), a family member took her out for her birthday and paid in cash. When the relative mentioned having the exact amount for the bill, she worried they hadn’t included a tip. The server apparently noticed too.
The lunch took an uncomfortable turn
The creator explained that the family member does not normally take her out and has a reputation for being cheap. Still, she accepted the birthday invitation and went along for lunch.
When it came time to pay, her relative began counting cash. She never saw the check or knew how much their meal cost, but hearing that there was “exactly the right amount” made her stomach drop.
She hoped the calculation included a tip. The creator didn’t have cash with her, however, and because her relative was covering the birthday meal, she didn’t intervene before the payment was made.
As they prepared to leave, the server reportedly returned to their table with something to say. “If you guys don’t want to tip, then next time, like, order takeout and don’t dine in,” the creator recalled her telling them.
She was stunned. The creator maintains that she normally tips and doesn’t agree with leaving a server nothing, even though she isn’t particularly fond of tipping culture. What bothered her at that point was how directly the server addressed them. “I’ve never in my life had someone like, approach,” she recalled.
When she questioned the comment, the server allegedly repeated her point, telling the pair they shouldn’t dine in if they weren’t going to leave a tip. The creator then offered a solution. Since she had a credit card with her, she said the server could put the tip on her card. At the same time, she told the employee that she thought the way she had approached them was inappropriate.
That could have ended the disagreement. Instead, she claims the server refused to take the tip. “She actually denied me giving her a tip and was like, ‘I just want to let you guys know,’” she recalled.
The refusal stood out considering that some servers would rather reject a small tip than accept money they consider insulting. Here, however, the creator was offering to make up for a gratuity that had not been left at all.
She also wondered whether race influenced how comfortable the server felt confronting the table. She noted that she and her relative are Black and questioned whether the employee would have addressed white customers in the same manner. She did not claim to know the answer, but said the thought crossed her mind during the exchange.
None of that meant she was happy with her family member. “That particular family member would just be blowing me,” the creator admitted, making clear that she was annoyed about the decision not to tip. Still, she argued that a voluntary gratuity didn’t give the server permission to speak to customers however she wanted.
Viewers were much less united on who crossed the line. “It’s inappropriate to beg a customer for a tip,” one person argued. Another agreed, “No.. tipping is not mandatory.”
Others had little sympathy for the table. “Y’all were in the wrong wtf,” one commenter wrote, while someone else said, “Not tipping is so gross tbh.”
