Black woman upgrades to Delta business class. Her seatmate refuses to digest it and immediately asks what she does for a living: ‘What do you want?’
Getting upgraded to business class should not require explaining why you belong there. Yet for one Black woman, settling into her Delta seat apparently came with an unexpected question from the man sitting beside her: What did she do for a living?
It could have been harmless small talk. The timing, however, made TenickaB (@tenickab) wonder why her job was suddenly his concern. Anyone who has ever felt unexpectedly scrutinized after taking a premium airline seat can probably understand why she was not interested in simply answering him.
Tenicka, who shares content as The Colorful Life, recalled the exchange in a TikTok that has drawn around 1 million views. She explained that she is a Delta Diamond member and had expected the upgrade on the domestic flight. Once she sat down, however, she noticed her seatmate looking her up and down before he asked, “What do you do for work? What do you do for a living?”
Then came her turn
Instead of telling him what she did, Tenicka asked, “Do you work for Delta? Do you work here?” When the man replied, “Uh, no,” she responded, “Oh, okay,” before taking the conversation somewhere else entirely.
She pretended this was her first time flying commercial because she normally flew private. “On private, only the staff talk to you,” she told him before asking, “So what are you doing here next to me?”
The man clarified that he was simply her seatmate. Tenicka kept the bit going, acting confused that passengers on commercial flights apparently sat beside strangers and spoke to them. “Is that what they do on commercial flights?” she asked. “They sit next to you and they talk to you?”
Tenicka kept insisting she had never flown commercial and acted as though the people around her were there to help. She called it turning into the “rich mom” and even asked the man to put her bag up. Reflecting on why she reacted that way, Tenicka asked, “What do you want? And what are you asking me questions about who I am?”
Her exaggerated response was deliberate. At the beginning of the video, she explained that one of her “favorite things to do is to fight a microaggression with a macroaggression.” Rather than explain her career or justify her presence in the cabin, she chose to have some fun with the question.
The exchange clearly struck a nerve with viewers, many of whom believed the question was less about casual conversation and more about determining how she could afford to be sitting there. Premium cabins can apparently invite plenty of unsolicited attention, even before getting into who other passengers think should be allowed into business class.
“They love to ask ‘What do you do?’ To size you up,” one commenter wrote. Others shared the answers they use when strangers ask similar questions. “I usually say ‘oh I’m not hiring,’” one person joked. Another offered, “My favorite response to that ‘are you looking for a job?’”
One viewer claimed questions about work are especially familiar when they fly first class. “They ask almost every time I’m in first class. I always say I’m a street pharmacist,” they wrote.
“I don’t even waste time saying all that,” another person added. “I say, I don’t do anything. I won the lottery and now I travel the world and meet hard workers like yourself.”
Others simply appreciated Tenicka’s quick response. “I wish I was this quick-witted,” one viewer admitted, while another wrote, “We all need to act like this.”
Perhaps the best description of Tenicka’s approach came from a viewer who wrote, “He wasn’t expecting two-factor authentication on the line of questioning.” Tenicka never gave him the answer he originally wanted. Instead, she left him with considerably more questions than he started with.
