Billie Eilish Cast Conan O’Brien as a Perfect Horror Icon

This is genius.

Billie Eilish just dropped the wildest casting suggestion of the year, and it’s so perfect it hurts. During a recent segment of a Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend episode, the Grammy-winning artist straight-up told the late-night legend he should play Slender Man because his towering height and eerie vibe make him the ideal horror icon. The exchange was equal parts hilarious and unsettling, with Eilish insisting O’Brien had a “freakish size” that could terrify audiences.

The conversation started innocently enough, with Eilish and O’Brien bonding over how much they hated their names growing up. But it quickly took a dark turn when Eilish pivoted to O’Brien’s physical appearance. “You have such an amazing opportunity,” she told him, practically giddy. “You could be so scary.”

O’Brien, ever the sport, fired back with a sarcastic jab. “Oh, so my humor? My wit? ‘No! Your freakish size! You could be Slender Man!'” he said, mimicking her tone. The back-and-forth was pure gold, but the real takeaway was clear: Eilish wasn’t joking. She genuinely believes O’Brien could nail the role of one of the internet’s most infamous creepypasta villains.

Slender Man is the stuff of nightmares

A tall, faceless figure in a black suit who lurks in the shadows of digital folklore, the character originated in 2009 when a user named Victor Surge (real name Eric Knudsen) posted two Photoshopped images on the Something Awful forums as part of a contest to create paranormal images. The pictures, paired with cryptic captions, sparked a wildfire of online storytelling.

According to Yahoo News, kids at school started swapping tales about “Slender sickness,” a made-up condition that supposedly made you feel queasy when the creature was near. It wasn’t long before Slender Man became a full-blown urban legend, evolving through retellings in the same way classic folklore does

The legend took a dark turn in 2014 when two young girls in Wisconsin attempted to murder their friend as a “sacrifice” to Slender Man. The incident sent shockwaves through the media, with parents and experts suddenly scrutinizing the dangers of internet horror stories.

Folklore expert Lynne McNeill, an associate professor at Utah State University, explained that Slender Man’s rise is a perfect example of how digital culture accelerates the spread of modern myths. “That sense of a story being passed on over generations, we often think of it as being passed person to person,” she said. “But it can also occur over the course of hours, days, or weeks.”

Why does Conan O’Brien fit the role so well?

For starters, Slender Man is described as unnaturally tall, pale, and dressed in a sharp black suit, all boxes O’Brien checks without even trying, states Pajiba. The late-night host stands at a towering 6’4″, and his lanky frame has been the subject of jokes for decades. But it’s not just his height that makes him a perfect match.

O’Brien’s rubbery facial expressions and comedic timing could add a whole new layer of terror to the character. Imagine Slender Man cracking a creepy smile or delivering a deadpan one-liner before vanishing into the shadows. It’s the kind of twist that could make the legend even more unsettling.

Eilish didn’t just stop at the suggestion, either. She made O’Brien stand up so she could fully appreciate his height, practically gushing over how well he’d fit the role.

Of course, there’s one major hurdle

Slender Man is famously faceless. The character’s smooth, featureless head is a key part of his eerie aesthetic, and O’Brien’s expressive face is a huge part of his charm. But Eilish’s suggestion wasn’t necessarily about a full-blown movie role. Instead, she seemed to be pitching the idea of O’Brien leaning into the character for something like a Halloween costume or a comedic skit. And honestly, that might be the best approach.

O’Brien has already proven he can pull off unsettling looks. At this year’s Oscars, he dressed up as Aunt Gladys from Weapons, complete with wild makeup and a wig that made him look like he’d crawled out of a nightmare. The transformation was so jarring that it sparked a wave of memes and reactions online. If he can make Aunt Gladys terrifying, imagine what he could do with Slender Man’s signature blank stare and elongated limbs.

The idea of O’Brien playing Slender Man isn’t just a random joke; it’s a full-circle moment for internet culture. Slender Man was born from the same kind of chaotic, creative energy that fuels late-night comedy. Both are products of their time, evolving through shared storytelling and inside jokes. If anyone can make a faceless horror icon feel fresh, it’s Conan O’Brien. The man has spent decades turning awkwardness into comedy gold, so why not turn it into horror gold too?

There’s also something deliciously meta about the whole concept

Slender Man is a character who thrives in the gray area between fiction and reality, and O’Brien has spent his career blurring those same lines. Whether he’s hosting a talk show, roasting celebrities at the Oscars, or popping up in random cameos, he’s always been a master of playing with perception. A Slender Man skit or costume would be the ultimate extension of that, turning a digital boogeyman into a real-life punchline.

Hollywood has been capitalizing on O’Brien’s comedic chops for years, and a horror-comedy project might be the perfect next step. Imagine a short film or even a series of sketches where O’Brien’s Slender Man stalks unsuspecting victims, only to deliver a perfectly timed joke before disappearing into the night.
