Woman Boards an Uber, Then a Few Minutes Into the Ride the Driver is Complimenting Her Looks and Asking if She Lives Alone: ‘That Was Weird’

As women, we constantly need to be extra cautious about our environment. It’s not the most enjoyable experience, but unfortunately, the only comfort we can find is reminding ourselves, “It is what it is,” and doing it anyway. @gigisdiaryyyy (Khadija Omar), in a video she shared on TikTok, described a “sketchy” Uber experience with her driver.

Omar said that the moment she got into her Uber, the driver started complimenting her, which she took well. However, when she sat down behind the driver, she noticed that he had angled the mirror to look at her. Omar tried to ignore it and put on her headphones, but the driver allegedly started asking her “the strangest questions.” So what was he asking?

The driver apparently asked Omar to text him her exact address so he could move into the building. Notably, he already had the address in the app, yet he still asked her to text it to him from her personal number. What’s even weirder, Omar revealed, is that the driver asked her who she lived with. She said that, sensing danger, she told him she lived with her parents and older brother, and after a lukewarm response, he went completely quiet.

“Put them on speaker and start talking”

Speaking of the incident, Omar said, “That was weird. That was really uncomfortable, and I was scared to like disagree cause I’m like the only person in the car right now. Mind you, he can cancel the ride at any time, and it’ll like make it seem as if I’ve just like left or some shit.” Omar stated that she agreed to text her Uber driver her address but said that she needed to make a call before that and then “quickly” got out and left.

People in the comments section of Omar’s post expressed concern over her experience. A few suggested ways for her to stay safe in the future. One user wrote, “Call someone. Anyone. Put them on speaker and start talking about where you are and what you see. Start asking the driver questions while on the phone.” Another said, “u can stop rides at any time, report weird situations for your security post rides, u can and should record audio, also not every city has women riders but they exist!”

Some people also shared their own experiences in similar situations. One user commented, “My uber asked me “do you wanna go somewhere besides home?” NO TAKE ME HOME BRO.” Another user stated, “Dude kept asking me if I had a boyfriend or what and where I lived. I was going home but I told him I lived in another state and was just visiting.”

This is not the first time someone has gone on social media to report strange behavior involving Uber, but we hope it comes to an end soon. Uber is starting to feel more dangerous.

Omar’s fear and reaction are valid

Incidents of drivers kidnapping individuals, particularly women, are not uncommon. Just a few months ago, in June, a woman reported that an Uber driver had sexually assaulted her. According to NBC News South Florida, the woman had gone clubbing the previous night and remembered nothing afterward, leading her to suspect she had been drugged.

Her suspicions were further confirmed when she woke up at Palm Lakes Hospital the next day and complained of vaginal soreness, which led her to believe she had been raped. The report also said authorities had reviewed CCTV footage showing the driver carrying the victim, who was in an inebriated state, to his apartment. Perez was subsequently arrested and detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Considering this case and the general fear such situations inspire, it is truly commendable that Omar could exercise such presence of mind and escape the situation. Sadly, not everyone can defend themselves from this kind of assault.
