The Official Avengers: Endgame Synopsis Reveals Mostly Nothing

It's the final countdown...

We have an official synopsis for Avengers: Endgame, and anyone who was hoping for some real details about how the Avengers plan to stop Thanos is mostly out of luck. The synopsis is worded vaguely, with just enough wiggle room for speculation based on other theories that have been bouncing around. You can’t have a film with no official synopsis, so we get the vaguest one possible.

The synopsis reads: “After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins due to the efforts of the Mad Titan, Thanos. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.”

Well, that last bit about consequences all but guarantees we’re seeing at least one major death that sticks this time around. While Gamora, Heimdall, and Loki might all have died pre-Snapture and therefore might not come back (though Gamora might return due to Soul Stone trickery), everyone who was Snaptured up is fair game to return, especially since several of them have sequel deals in the works. However, in order to drive home the magnitude of undoing what Thanos did, someone might have to die and actually stay dead.

This is the end of an era after all, and consequences usually means getting written out in some way, shape, or form. We’re all pretty sure Tony and Steve are goners, so let’s hope the consequences include Thor getting some sort of peace that doesn’t result in his death. Please, let Thor live. He is a good dude.

Consequences could also refer to the secret villain who’s worse than Thanos who has been rumored to make an appearance. The consequences could include unleashing a new evil into the world and as a result, setting up future Phases of the MCU with a Big Bad to rival Thanos and set up narrative urgency.

The bit about undoing Thanos’s actions is kept purposefully vague, and there aren’t many other verbs to choose from, but I wonder if undoing won’t tie into the prevalent theory that time travel will be involved somehow. They could literally undo Thanos’s actions by changing the timeline so he never gets ahold of the stones and therefore can never snap everyone away. It might be the easiest way to undo everything and save the lives of half the universe.

Finally, they are not hiding that this is the end of the journey. Restoring order “once and for all” means that the Avengers, with the exception of Black Widow’s solo film or any surprise cameos down the line, will never assemble again after this. Of course, their journey will be a little in vain, since this isn’t the end of the MCU, but we can honor that journey regardless.

The elements of this being the literal endgame for the characters will probably crop up more in marketing and break our hearts both in trailers and the film itself, so bring some tissues come April.

Are you excited for Avengers: Endgame, or do you want the theories to stop?
